De la?

"Je bois de la bier": why does it have both de and la. Prior to this I used either one to refer to the beer or just a beer.

It's "la bière". "De la" in this case means "some of the" or a part of the whole. It would translate in English to "I am drinking beer" or "I am drinking some beer".
