how are you supposed to know when to use El or La in this sentence the other word is spelled the exact same in both circumstances.

Here's the general rule: Ends in...

–a: use feminine –ión: use feminine –e: sometimes one, sometimes the other Anything else: use masculine But there are exceptions.

Usually it's just -a, but there are some other things.

I forgot to mention that -vid and -tad, or I think those, are also feminine. You won't encounter these very often, but yeah.
