They are loanwords from the German word, which itself is a loanword from the Italian word "tartuficolo".

kartoflerne = the potatoes
This is one of the only words I knew in Danish for most of my life, because I went to Denmark to visit distant relatives when I was 11 and they made me potatoes and gravy and taught me how to say potato.
