NEW: Remove or Reset Languages

Many people have asked us for the ability to either reset their progress in a language, or to be able to entirely remove it from their profile. I'm happy to say that we now allow you to do both.

If you're interested in this, just go to the settings page and click "reset or remove languages". I should warn you that removing or resetting cannot be undone, so use these new powers responsibly :) If you remove a language, you can always add it back later, but all your progress will be lost and you'll have to start from the beginning.

Hi Luis, thanks for adding this feature. One minor issue: I'm mostly learning Spanish, but I also used to be learning a bit of French and German, and at one point, I tried English from Spanish. I decided that I wanted to remove French and German, to focus only on Spanish, and to also get rid of English, because I didn't really like it. I removed French and German, but I can't remove English, though, because it shows up as the only language I'm learning when I switch to it. Is there any way to remove it?

Unfortunately, we don't allow that yet.

Sorry to come with this question 4 years later, but is it still not allowed?

It would be great to have function to reset the tree without losing level, especially when the tree isupdated. For French it happens automatically but not for Spanish. I would love to pass it again from th beginning but probably not exactly in the order they have in the tree but if i reset the tree it remove all the progress...

I'm from italy, and my english is good, but not perfect, and I think I should get better. at the moment I'm studying spanish (thanks to this wonderful website).

why can't I learn spanish (from english) while I'm improving english from italian?

I should edit my settings every time, and this is not the best option

Yes, I agree, I'm Learning English and French at the same time, and every time i switch to a language i need to do it from the settings page instead of the home page... which can be modified !

Hi Luis, I noticed that this hasn't been taken care of yet. Do you guys still plan on adding a password confirmation before permanently removing or resetting a language?

Thanks for the useful feature a lot of people have been waiting for!

I haven't studied in German in a year, so I don't remember much. Should I reset? Opinions, anyone?

Yeah, you're not very far, and your word stregth seems to have decayed quite a bit, so I would say yes.

Thanks for implementing this feature. Is it available for everybody or only to a test group. I cannot find the "reset/remove" option in my settings. Also, if I remove a language now, I will not be able to add it again if let's say in year I change my mind?

May 27, 2013

https://www.duolingo.com/Luis

It should be there for everybody, right below the language chooser. You can always add languages back, but you'll have to start from the beginning.

Thank you so much!! I have been wanting this feature!! After I removed a few of my languages, though, I started receiving email reminders to practice those languages even though I already deleted them.

I guess it would be a disaster if anyone removes a language by mistake !!! one needs to be more careful from now on !!!

These remove language buttons/ links do not exist on my phone or tablet (Android). I have searched under every heading and I see nothing that even hints at being able to remove a language. Does it only work on a desktop computer?

do you loose all your skill points if you reset a language vs remove it?

I wonder would it be ok to reset but not lose your xp. what happens if you just want to learn it all over again!

I studied some Spanish long ago, but I seem to have enthusiasm for my newest studies. When studying Mandarin in the past, I wanted to concentrate on it. I would begin a sentence in Spanish, and finish the sentence in Mandarin! Vietnamese is new to me. Sometimes the Vietnamese diacritical marks cause me to want to take a break. I tried adding Spanish, but find I continue with Vietnamese, the newest. I'm thinking about removing Spanish for now, since I'm not taking the time to devote to it. I would like to achieve at least minimal competence in Vietnamese.

Hi, why don't i find this feature from the settings page? Is there another page of settings somewhere i can't find it? I would really like to remove a language i accidentally added. Thanks.

I do not think it is useful. You can always repeat your passed lections without a loss of progress.
