What is the difference between maiale and porco?

Originally maiale was supposed the be a castrated pig, and porco the generic pig, but porco has been included in so many imprecations that it started feeling vulgar, and people (with the exception of peasants) nowadays prefer using only maiale for both. Then we started slandering maiale too :P
