I typed "M'aintín" and I got an error message that there has to be a space after the apostrophe: M' aintín. Is that right? I assumed it would work like French: There the vowel gets replaced by the apostrophe, and the words get squished together.

No, there shouldn't be a space there. It's a limitation with the system that needs to be fixed.
