"La donna perde il marito."

Is there a reason why it is "il marito" not "sua marito"?

It would be "suo marito" as possessives behave as adjectives, and agree with the noun they refer to. As a rule of thumb, the possessive can be switched with the definite article if it agrees with the subject: "ho perso la chiave" instead of "ho perso la mia chiave", unless you want to specify "my key" as opposed to other people's keys.

"La donna perde suo marito" would be fine as well.
