I think that there are situations where "la independencia" could be translated as " the independence" as in "La independencia del pais es fundamental."

Does the "La" require capitalization? I submitted it as a problem, but it might not be.

It does if it's the first letter of a sentence, as any other word. It doesn't need capitalization if it's in the middle part of a sentence, though, it's not an exception or anything.
