"Data should be used to personalize education, not just ads..."

A graphic on the DuoLingo Facebook page says this today.

In the early rounds of my Spanish tree, the word "vegetarian" was introduced. And food related sentences are very common. This is understandable since everybody eats, ordering food in a language is an inevitable 1st level need when traveling and "comer" is a good regular verb to use for constructing simple present tense sentences. But "vegetarian" seems like an unusual word to be pushed so heavily and so early in Spanish studies. I'm vegan and a health coach - I post a lot of stuff about food on my Facebook page and I follow a lot of vegan pages.

So I'm wondering, does everyone get those words or does DuoLingo use my Facebook data to determine some of my words?

I don't mind. I'd actually be impressed. Just curious.

I love DuoLingo. My 30 day streak is the most work I've put into Spanish in many years trying, and it's been fun and easy.

Happy to hook up with other learners.

Makes sense. If they custom designed my lessons around my Facebook interests all my lessons would be about Led Zeppelin albums and hilarious cats.

That quote is from a presentation Luis made at a conference a week or two ago. It's a great quote and an even better ideal.

The words for vegetarian are included for everyone. Lessons are not individualized - yet. During the QA session following his presentation in that video, Luis mentions that a goal is to get Duolingo to the point where curricula are customized for each student's needs.

Here are (my) main points ('take-aways'):

  • "we design for the students [not for the system]."

  • "we always design for the end-user."

  • "we are working on personalization."

Let's see how this is going to work out with withdrawing features, A/B testing, etc pp.

edit: I am not really sure why he used those extremely old screenshots of the DL tree.

As a vegetarian, you're welcome to talk to me even if you don't know how to say "vegetarian." There are plenty of other things to talk about :)

EDIT: Se las palabras: Vegeteriano/Vegetariana Vegetarian@ ;) (I double checked my memory through Google Translate. Why is it saying "vegan" for vegetariano? Is that correct o no?

Gracias.

Everyone is on the same page-no matter experienced or new"comer". See what I did there? :)

By the way, the words for vegetarian are available to everyone. Duolingo are making updates to make everyone at their own level(once they start learning their language).

Well if it were customised for us veggies there wouldn't be so many disgusting references to people eating corpses would there. Cow corpses and chicken corpses in particular.

Such a good point. It was insensitive of me not to think of it. Thank you for a point well made. :)
