Dutch music?

Could anybody reccomend some good Dutch music?

September 13, 2014

Some songs from different artists (and different genres, but mostly pop-ish). All of these artists have other cool songs too, so you could look some more up if you like them (because the ones I've linked are not necessarily their best ones).

eefje de visser- ongeveer (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vC_kKMHZGpk)

Nielson- sexy als ik dans (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zKmsZzJQJV0)

guus meeuwis- het is een nacht (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8R2vT8EM2ac)

the opposites- slapeloze nachten (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mnlam8eJw1E)

Nick & Simon- de soldaat (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M_b5uTzBKpk)

gers pardoel- Bagagedrager (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MZRw9NiVUuM)

Marco borsato- dromen zijn bedrog (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iIaVUl3lkbM)

de jeugd van tegenwoordig- sterrenstof (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cNMXSKfWfLQ)

racoon- oceaan (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQvkcVNdgPo)

doe maar- liever dan lief (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KTeQ_QjPf0Q)

acda en de munnik- het regent zonnestralen (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZkbhA1NcTM)

Spinvis- oostende (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IzfJfkqfgHM)

Bløf- alles is liefde (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y5NmKpwHXqM)

Have fun listening! Some of these are 'classics' (i.e. most dutch people would be able to sing along to them), some a bit more unknown. But, don't have high expectations. A lot of good dutch artists produce music in english, because they reach a larger audience that way. But that means there are less great dutch language songs. Still, you should be able to find a song you like - the artists I've mentioned are only a few samples :)

@blizzard-spider What a list! Good work!

@Peterbrooks1 I can add a few more recommendations/comments (assuming your motivation is to improve your Dutch):

In the past, I listened to liedkunst.nl (an online radio station) - as far as I remember, it just plays wall to wall Dutch music (and maybe some adverts). You'll find various styles played, which is perhaps why I don't listen so much now. I like some artists, but I personally don't warm to Smartlappen.

Spinvis (above) is a great choice, in my opinion. His lyrics are rather unusual... poetic. At times, you'll probably wonder if you've understood correctly.

Freek De Jonge - very lyrically driven, as far as I can tell. Surprised he wasn't in the list above. Not listened to him much myself, but so many of my Dutch friends seem fond of him.

I'd also recommend Roos Rebergen and her band Roosbeef - quite a likable voice (A Dutch friend of mine says her diction is poor, but I find her easy to understand)

I've listened to some songs by Jaap Fischer - again, some of the lyrics seem odd at times. Very lyrically driven songs.

The Kik produce catchy/poppy music, reminiscent of the 60s.

And as much as it's really not my favourite style of music, sometimes I can't help listening to Nielson and Miss Montreal's collaboration, "Hoe", on continuous loop.

Thank you! I probably should have been more specific, but this is perfect!

No prob! I know how hard it is to find nice dutch-language music; this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zRAIgh6WYoA) is the top 50 list of dutch music from 2013, and like 2/3rd is sung in english (and 1 in german) >:/ . That list may have some you like too btw, and I think there are some dutch music playlists on youtube which you could check out. I really enjoy listening to songs across different languages, so it's my pleasure to help you out here :)

Thank you so much. My appreciation cannot be overstated.

It's three years later but these are pretty good! Thank you!!

First one to tease you :) What kind of genre do you like?

Mine eyes have seen what did there :)

Spotify Netherlands has an official playlist called Je Moers Taal (some kind of dialect for "je moeders taal" or "your mother's language"), which consists of almost 4 hours of music in Dutch.

They also have a playlist called Eigen Bodem with songs from Dutch artists that have gained popularity outside of our country. These are all songs in English, though.

Both playlist are still being updated with a new song or two every now and then.

And while the songs may be a bit too childish for you, music from Kinderen voor Kinderen might be good practice. It's from an organization that makes loads of kids songs sung by kids (thus the name Kinderen voor Kinderen - children [singing] for children), the words are well-articulated and the subjects are simple and often have some kind of story. And there are hundreds of them.

One user has also made a community Spotify playlist for Dutch songs. More info over here.

Do you want music IN Dutch? Because Anouk and Within Temptation are awesome, but they sing in English ...

Try this . It is really stupid and funny, but it is really easy to understand. And apparently the main line is an inside joke with a few native Nederlanders

In general Dutch music is terrible. But some good musicians are: Blof, Doe maar en de dijk

I like Marco Borsato and Frank Boeijen, because they're a bit easier to understand.

Speaking of Marco Borsato, have a look the latest series of The Voice Holland. Marco Borsato is one of the coaches, and my wife's cousin Dennis Kroon is a contestant :-)

No childhood should be complete without some Jip en Janneke. If yours lacked, and of course mine did, start here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X48EA67vFdY

Did Golden Earring ever produce any classics in Dutch?

I don't know how much music the band produced in Dutch, but I think most Americans my age instantly recognize at least two of their English songs, "Radar Love" (1973) and "Twilight Zone" (1982, aka "When the Bullet Hits the Bone").

Golden Earring produced classic videos for both of them, the first perhaps somewhat remarkable in that it was several years before MTV launched.

Radar Love: (a must-watch if you're into wacky vintage autos)

    Twilight Zone:

George Kooymans, guitarist for Golden Earring, has a band Vreemde Kostgangers wherein they play songs with Dutch titles and Dutch lyrics.

"Er valt harde harde regen op mijn kop . . . Harde harde regen. Maar het maakt niet uit." Ik ben op weg

A classic with simple text: Veronica by Cornels Vreeswijk http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OrlEh1W9Y3k Also a classic but with more text: Daar gaat ze by Clouseau http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OsJa3ffTM2g

I forgot to mention André Hazes!

I was reminded when it was mentioned on NOS Nieuws yesterday that it was 10 years since he died.

DOE MAAR is my personal favourite!

Listen to this whole album and learn more Dutch... :)

Ik vind de Belgische zanger 'Clouseau' ook een echte aanrader. Vooral het nummer 'daar gaat ze'.

Ook het lied 'het is een nacht van 'Guus Meeuwis' is een echte aanrader.

In case someone is still looking at this, and in case there are people who like more Caribbean-style music, here's a list of Dutch language songs from Suriname:
