It's not a matter of politeness. A donna is not a 'lady' in Italian. That would be a signora.
Donna merely refers the gender and translating it as 'lady' would change the meaning of the sentence.

Try putting all your tongue on the palate and pronunce "li", with practice you should achieve the right pronunciation of "gli" (i recognise it's not easy at first)
