Er ist am Reisen.

The sentence above means he is traveling. I put Er ist Reisen and it was wrong. Why do I need to add "am" which means "off" "made of" "from", etc.

The link above explains the tense of "Er ist am Reisen". But "Er ist Reisen" is still wrong. The simple form of "He travels" or "He is travelling" would be, "Er reist".
