Altura is feminine, yes, but I thought before an "A" word or an "A" sounding word "el" was used. "El agua."

Only if the first "a" is stressed. We say "el [a]gua" or "el [ar]ma" but "la al[tu]ra" or "la avio[ne]ta" :]

Seems "the altitude" should also be accepted.
