Maltese Lesson 1

As you may know, I have been trying to get Maltese on here, but it hasn't happened yet. So, if you wanted to learn it, maybe you can learn a bit from these lessons that I will post.

<h1>Maltese Lesson 1 - Alphabet & Greetings</h1>

Alphabet

  • Maltese uses Latin script, with a few additional characters:

(Bold print for vowels, normal for consonants.)

Aa

Bb

Ċċ

Dd

Ee

Ff

Ġġ

Gg

Għgħ ('għ' is a single character and it is silent, but elongates the next vowel sound)

Hh (silent, but elongates the next vowel sound)

Ħħ

Ii

Ieie ('ie' is a single character)

Jj

Kk

Ll

Mm

Nn

Oo

Pp

Qq (a glottal stop - do not pronounce)

Rr

Ss

Tt

Uu

Vv

Ww

Xx

Żż

Zz

  • Get the pronunciations here.

Greetings

  • As in English, there are lots of different ways to greet people in Maltese. Here are some of the most common ones:

  • Merħba! = Welcome! pronounce: 'MARE-huh-ba'

  • Bonġu = Good morning (This is casual, but most people greet each other this way) pronounce: 'BON-joo'

  • L-għodwa t-tajba = Good morning (Less used) pronounce: 'LOD-wa TY-bah'

  • Ħellow! = Hello! (One of the frequent loanwords. Pronounced the same as English)

  • Bonswa! = Good afternoon! (Actually used quite often) pronounce: 'BON-swa'

  • Saħħa! = Bye! (Commonly used) pronounce: 'SAH-ha'

  • Il-lejl it-tajjeb! = Good night! (Before parting for the night) pronounce: 'ill-ALE it-TY-ebb'

Learn these, then come back (next week hopefully) for more!

Grazzi ħafna!

OMG! Love it. You need to continue it

Because I can only upvote once, have ten lingots.

    Hmm... sounds a bit Frenchy

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/StrapsOption

There is the very occasional French influence from when Napoleon was there ('bonswa' for one), but for the most part, you wouldn't even know there was any French in it at all.

    Prince George

    there to Malta to learn

    and giggle

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/StrapsOption

He did once actually. Some British royals have hidden out in Malta in the past.

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Jack.Elliot

I think the wee prince has giggled more than once

    https://www.duolingo.com/profile/StrapsOption

And I'm not sure if you know or not, but...

Grazzi! I'm part Maltese and have wanted to learn it for quite awhile now! Hopefully Duolingo accepts your application...

    [deactivated user]

He didn't apply, he wants to learn Maltese too...

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/calcastor

Well that could have been more clear...

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/StrapsOption

I'm part Maltese too. Four people that I know of have applied, but I don't have enough of the language to do so.

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Cesca001

Make that five! Just applied after seeing your discussion as to why Maltese should be offered on here

      Still no maltese in Duolingo??

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Francesco314

My maltese employer would like to pay us non-maltese employees a course in the local language, but they can't find a good one. After all, a few hours a week for a few months are never enough to learn a completely new language. I told them the best option would be to have maltese on Duolingo. How come it's not there yet?

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/StrapsOption

The staff at Duolingo have just decided not to add it yet. I really hope they do sooner rather than later. Do you work in Malta?

Here is all my other Maltese stuff if you've not seen it yet.

I'm Maltese, my New Zealander partner would like to learn my langue and a lot of my friends are interested too! Maltese is such a beautiful langue with so much history behind it, please make a course! I feel like Malta never gets much notice, its unfair. There's a course in Klingon & Valyrian! Why not Maltese!?

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/tonid

Duolingo has Klingon and Valyrian cause it's popular and gives them money... It's about money, not helping people, I'm afraid :(

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Klementa_1

Really. Same here. Maltese is an amazing language with an interesting history too.

I love Malta!!!! I was there for one month and it was amazing month in amazing family. So I give you two thumbs up. You have to continue it.

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/StrapsOption

Grazzi, you can rest assured I will!

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/ZoranS.

I would like to promote the idea of Duolingo Maltese course, I have some ideas, I will try something...

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/EmmaW521467

Yes! Duolingo, we NEED a Maltese course. Unfortunately, the majority of people who learn Maltese are part Maltese and it is sad. Being half Maltese I know a few words but not enough to say sentences in the interesting language. Please Duolingo, make a Maltese course!

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/EmmaW521467

      Just donated 40 Lingots for this important cause! How to count up to 8 in Maltese 1 – wieħed (pronounced weer-head) 2 – tnejn (te-neigh) 3 – tlieta (clee-ta) 4 – erbgħa (air-ba) 5 – ħamsa (hump-sa) 6 – sitta (seet-a) 7 – sebgħa (seba) 8 – tmienja (te-min-ya)

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/AbelStuart

I will sign the petition ! Duolingo , where is the Maltese?!

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/MakennaFow1

I have a grandparent that is Maltese. He tries to help me learn basic Maltese’s words such as plate and bread, simple things. But I would love more than anything to learn actual phrases in Maltese so I’m able to understand my own history a tad more and be able to surprise my grandpa by having the ability to say a full sentence and not just one worded objects. Please add some Maltese to the Duolingo options! It would be amazing

      Ħelow!

Iva, naqbel miegħek, għandna bżonn tal-kors tal-ilsien Malti f'Duolingo!

Yes, I agree with you, we need a Maltese language course at Duolingo!

(No, I'm not Maltese, been learning it however for a year now ;).

There are some things in this lesson that I disagree with, however. Hh (akka) does not elongate the next vowel (unlike għ – għin). It is simply completely silent unless at the end of the word (same as għ) or unless next to għ (għh sounds like ħħ).

Also, saħħa is used very rarely and it does not mean bye but "health" or "strength". What's used for goodbye most of the time is "ċaw" (ciao) or "ċaw ċaw".

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Thomas915571

Please can you apply for Maltese?

      Are you Maltese? I am.

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Mai.vel

Hi, I am from Malta and I speak Maltese perfectly. Just one tiny point... Bonswa is not still commonly used very much, but a Maltese person will understand. Great job! In Maltese... Hellow! Jiena noqghod f' Malta u naf nitkellem bil-Malti tajjeb. Punt zghir li nixtieq naqsam maghkom... 'Bonswa' m'ghadiex tintuza wisq (ghalkemm nghiduha xorta wahda) u bosta mill-maltin ser jifmu din il-kelma. Bravi u komplu imxu l'quddiem!
