Maltese Lesson 1
As you may know, I have been trying to get Maltese on here, but it hasn't happened yet. So, if you wanted to learn it, maybe you can learn a bit from these lessons that I will post.
<h1>Maltese Lesson 1 - Alphabet & Greetings</h1>
- Maltese uses Latin script, with a few additional characters:
(Bold print for vowels, normal for consonants.)
Għgħ ('għ' is a single character and it is silent, but elongates the next vowel sound)
Hh (silent, but elongates the next vowel sound)
Ieie ('ie' is a single character)
Qq (a glottal stop - do not pronounce)
- Get the pronunciations here.
As in English, there are lots of different ways to greet people in Maltese. Here are some of the most common ones:
Merħba! = Welcome! pronounce: 'MARE-huh-ba'
Bonġu = Good morning (This is casual, but most people greet each other this way) pronounce: 'BON-joo'
L-għodwa t-tajba = Good morning (Less used) pronounce: 'LOD-wa TY-bah'
Ħellow! = Hello! (One of the frequent loanwords. Pronounced the same as English)
Bonswa! = Good afternoon! (Actually used quite often) pronounce: 'BON-swa'
Saħħa! = Bye! (Commonly used) pronounce: 'SAH-ha'
Il-lejl it-tajjeb! = Good night! (Before parting for the night) pronounce: 'ill-ALE it-TY-ebb'
Learn these, then come back (next week hopefully) for more!

My maltese employer would like to pay us non-maltese employees a course in the local language, but they can't find a good one. After all, a few hours a week for a few months are never enough to learn a completely new language. I told them the best option would be to have maltese on Duolingo. How come it's not there yet?
I'm Maltese, my New Zealander partner would like to learn my langue and a lot of my friends are interested too! Maltese is such a beautiful langue with so much history behind it, please make a course! I feel like Malta never gets much notice, its unfair. There's a course in Klingon & Valyrian! Why not Maltese!?
I have a grandparent that is Maltese. He tries to help me learn basic Maltese’s words such as plate and bread, simple things. But I would love more than anything to learn actual phrases in Maltese so I’m able to understand my own history a tad more and be able to surprise my grandpa by having the ability to say a full sentence and not just one worded objects. Please add some Maltese to the Duolingo options! It would be amazing
Iva, naqbel miegħek, għandna bżonn tal-kors tal-ilsien Malti f'Duolingo!
Yes, I agree with you, we need a Maltese language course at Duolingo!
(No, I'm not Maltese, been learning it however for a year now ;).
There are some things in this lesson that I disagree with, however. Hh (akka) does not elongate the next vowel (unlike għ – għin). It is simply completely silent unless at the end of the word (same as għ) or unless next to għ (għh sounds like ħħ).
Also, saħħa is used very rarely and it does not mean bye but "health" or "strength". What's used for goodbye most of the time is "ċaw" (ciao) or "ċaw ċaw".
Hi, I am from Malta and I speak Maltese perfectly. Just one tiny point... Bonswa is not still commonly used very much, but a Maltese person will understand. Great job! In Maltese... Hellow! Jiena noqghod f' Malta u naf nitkellem bil-Malti tajjeb. Punt zghir li nixtieq naqsam maghkom... 'Bonswa' m'ghadiex tintuza wisq (ghalkemm nghiduha xorta wahda) u bosta mill-maltin ser jifmu din il-kelma. Bravi u komplu imxu l'quddiem!
