Maltese Lesson 1
As you may know, I have been trying to get Maltese on here, but it hasn't happened yet. So, if you wanted to learn it, maybe you can learn a bit from these lessons that I will post.
<h1>Maltese Lesson 1 - Alphabet & Greetings</h1>
- Maltese uses Latin script, with a few additional characters:
(Bold print for vowels, normal for consonants.)
Għgħ ('għ' is a single character and it is silent, but elongates the next vowel sound)
Hh (silent, but elongates the next vowel sound)
Ieie ('ie' is a single character)
Qq (a glottal stop - do not pronounce)
- Get the pronunciations here.
As in English, there are lots of different ways to greet people in Maltese. Here are some of the most common ones:
Merħba! = Welcome! pronounce: 'MARE-huh-ba'
Bonġu = Good morning (This is casual, but most people greet each other this way) pronounce: 'BON-joo'
L-għodwa t-tajba = Good morning (Less used) pronounce: 'LOD-wa TY-bah'
Ħellow! = Hello! (One of the frequent loanwords. Pronounced the same as English)
Bonswa! = Good afternoon! (Actually used quite often) pronounce: 'BON-swa'
Saħħa! = Bye! (Commonly used) pronounce: 'SAH-ha'
Il-lejl it-tajjeb! = Good night! (Before parting for the night) pronounce: 'ill-ALE it-TY-ebb'
Learn these, then come back (next week hopefully) for more!
Support the cause:
There is the very occasional French influence from when Napoleon was there ('bonswa' for one), but for the most part, you wouldn't even know there was any French in it at all.
He did once actually. Some British royals have hidden out in Malta in the past.
Grazzi! I'm part Maltese and have wanted to learn it for quite awhile now! Hopefully Duolingo accepts your application...
I'm part Maltese too. Four people that I know of have applied, but I don't have enough of the language to do so.
Make that five! Just applied after seeing your discussion as to why Maltese should be offered on here
My maltese employer would like to pay us non-maltese employees a course in the local language, but they can't find a good one. After all, a few hours a week for a few months are never enough to learn a completely new language. I told them the best option would be to have maltese on Duolingo. How come it's not there yet?
I love Malta!!!! I was there for one month and it was amazing month in amazing family. So I give you two thumbs up. You have to continue it.
I would like to promote the idea of Duolingo Maltese course, I have some ideas, I will try something...
Yes! Duolingo, we NEED a Maltese course. Unfortunately, the majority of people who learn Maltese are part Maltese and it is sad. Being half Maltese I know a few words but not enough to say sentences in the interesting language. Please Duolingo, make a Maltese course!
