365 Day Streak!
Well guys, I made it -- 365 days of consecutive practice! Lots of hard work, but it feels great to hit a big landmark. I don't have much in the way of tips/insights/reflections, but I'll do my best to answer any questions you might have.
On to year #2....
Anticipating some likely questions:
Are you fluent in Spanish yet?
No. But I'm better than I was when I started. I still have a hard time with colloquialisms, and casual language. I still have a hard time with listening and speaking. And my vocabulary is annoyingly small, so I feel like I still talk like a small child.
What do you do now that you're done your tree?
Mostly just "Strengthen Skills", with a little Immersion mixed in. I just finished my reverse tree recently (Spanish->English), so now I'm branching out a bit to different websites, watching videos in Spanish, etc. I'm enjoying BluiBlui, which was recommended on the forum a few days ago. And I use Memrise on occasion, when Duo gets stale.
Any plans to tackle another language?
Not yet. Once I solidify Spanish, then.... maybe.
Did you ever miss a day and have to use the Streak Freeze?
Yes, once. I had about a 150 day streak at the time. Logged in at 12:01am and saw that my XP for the day before was 0. I was terrified that my streak was about to reset itself to 0 days for about 30 seconds until I remembered that I had bought the Streak Freeze many weeks prior. Whew...
Do you have a life outside of Duolingo?
I eat and sleep most days.
I already said "congrats!", so I'll cut to the chase...Well, that was fun, as you answered any questions I would have had. Now join the Unofficial list of members from the one year+ hall of fame already! :)
Oh right, good idea. I'll get right on that. Jumpin right over all the "Soon to bes" :)
Thanks jolynne! Yours isn't too shabby either :)
(makes me wish my days went more quickly than yours)
Huge congrats! Pulling for you to have an even more successful second year of learning. Muy buen trabajo companero.
Muchas gracias, ldawg. It's encouraging to see you making such quick progress through your tree and being so active on the forums, really inspires me to keep plugging along. :)
I really appreciate it writchie, unfortunately i'm usually on the forums asking for help more than i'm able to help someone else but i'm hoping to reach a point where i can be of assistance to fellow duo'ers. Keep on keepin' on and keep us updated on your progress and journey.
Only ~50 days left, you'll get there!
It's a lot easier to keep it going once it becomes part of your daily routine, as I'm sure you've noticed.
I can't help it, haha. This language-learning stuff, it's just a wee bit addicting.
Felicitaciones! You are an integral member of this site. I see your posts every day, and you always have wonderful insight into whatever topic is brought up. Your 1-year streak is an inspiration to all of us little guys who recently found Duo, but are looking forward to one day achieving what you just have. Keep up the good work writchie!
I see your posts every day
Seriously though, thanks for the kind words. I don't know about integral, but I try to do my part to help people when they need it. After all, the community's a big part of what makes this site so special, and such an effective learning tool.
Indeed. You probably already posted this somewhere, but may I ask how long you spent working on your Eng->Spa tree? Before completion, that is.
You know, I have no idea, haha. A year maybe? I didn't work on it very consistently for my first 6 months or so on the site. But once I decided to take it seriously, I probably averaged 2 lessons a day, a little slower toward the end. I think the Spanish tree has around 320 total lessons, so... maybe 200 days?
I did have some experience coming in, having taken ~4 years of Spanish between high school and college. Even so, a lot of the tree (past the first checkpoint) was brand new to me.
Aha, thank you for this information. Perhaps I should take my time as well as I near the completion of the Spanish tree.
Thanks, moon. :)
Your flags there are really a sight to behold. That's incredible.
Will do, clovis.
Next goal: Fluency!.... or 500 days, whichever comes first :)
Congratulations on your streak! :Þ I'm working towards a 100 day streak! :Þ
Very nice feeling to know you have committed yourself to learning something for a whole year of your life!
Haha, oh god. 4% of my life, down the drain.
I suppose there's worse ways to spend my time :)
I like easy statistics, haha. Once they started sneaking Greek letters into it in college, I decided I'd be happy to stick with "normal" math.
Well done! I did it recently: when I get to quadruple digits, I'll let you know!
amazing! now you have 370 day streak but it well just get higher and higher. Congratulations I really feel happy for you!!!
Congratulations! Nice to see such dedication towards language learning. Quite inspiring.
Thanks, remoonline. Honestly though, I'm more of a "sucker for meaningless metrics" than a "dedicated learner". The lure of a huge streak was too much to resist :)
Congratulations, i hope you to success in the next year with Spanish :")
Congrats! I hope i can also hit a big landmark like you and other people :D
Thanks, anika. :)
You'll get there soon, it's a lot easier once you get in a routine.
That is so kind! The fact that you are giving away the gems you earned to people who responded to you! Thank you soo much for the gems! The gems was all i needed to take the 25 lingots test :D
Thanks, Eey. You're totally right about "stopping counting" after a while. Once logging on becomes part of your routine, it's not necessarily "hard" to maintain the streak anymore.
Also: your :)
Congratulations! Lots of people have many days like you and I hope one day I will have as many days as you ^^
You totally gave me the link here because I missed this one, didn't you? :PPP
I hope this bit of nostalgia for the year you started your journey makes up for it :D
Thought never crossed my mind. :)
Edit: It's a big mystery about the lingots. They just appear every time people post here, it's really strange.
You know what didn't cross my mind until just now? All of the ones I recognize are zombies. Oo And who even is that one in orange??!
Edit: aww, did you give me lingots?
