Difference between "wonen" and "leven"

I see the forms of "leven" used more often in a general "exists in this area" but I'd love to know what are the practical, conversational differences between wonen and leven?

"Ik woon in de Verenigde Staten." vs. "Ik leef in de Verenigde Staten."

Wonen means "to reside" whilst you're right, "leven" means "to exist".
