Chat rooms

I believe chat rooms for each language would be a good idea. What do you guys think? Will help people to interact in the language they are speaking with other people who are learning on Duolingo.

We've thought about this a lot. On the one hand we all agree they may help, but on the other we're trying to not add every feature on earth (since that clutters the website).

I think it should be an unlockable feature. Maybe you need to have a level 12 to 15 to go in. That way you can moderate the levels of speaking ability within the chat room.

I would say people of lower levels should be able to go in and read the chat (to help familiarise with the language) but not actually post.

I would have to agree with you Luis. I love the simplicity of the site right now, but I wouldn't mind perhaps one more feature added on in the future. I guess the trick is to constantly improve without losing Duolingo's identity in the process.

Yes, the trick is not to add all the features, but only the right features to make the best learning experience. We're working on a number of things and many times we don't actually add features that have been implemented because they simply don't help that much and add clutter. With chat rooms, we will likely try them out at some point though because we agree they could be awesome.

Thanks for taking the time to reply, Luis!

I guess, Luis has already a few more features in mind. Hence, he thinks it will clutter it. I can see quite a few areas for improvement - they already are working on quite a few I am guessing.

Yes. Even I was thinking whether it will clutter the website or not since there are quite a few more required and good features that can be included (IPA, pronunciation etc.). Just suggested in case you guys might be interested. I guess, for now, people on Duolingo can just start chatrooms on IRC.

I have been thinking about this too. My reading skill is getting better with duolingo. However, I need to start speaking as soon as possible. I went through the internet in search for some live chats, but when on duolingo, it would love to have everything in one place.

In addition to the chat rooms, I think it would be great to have a section where users could set up a 1 on 1 or group practice session via Skype. That way if I'm learning Spanish and someone else is learning English, we have a way to arrange a Skype session to help each other with real conversation.

Awesome! Thanks for the link.
