Italy is great! I lost my streak and don't care!
I've been able to ask questions, order things, etc, and feel fairly confident about my Italian overall. A cameriere praised my accent the other night! Today we saw (some of) Pompei and Herculaneum; tomorrow we go to Capri.
The wifi here is not great--free, but sllloooooowwww to the point of being impossible. So even if I had had time to practice on Duo every day, I couldn't get into the site! And I don't care about my lost streak at all.
I hope you all are well. I'll try to post again when we get back to Rome. Another 10 days to go!
That's how it should be! Enjoy yourself and have fun making use of all you have learnt!
Love, love Capri. Hope you had a fabulous time. Duolingo can wait - you are getting real life practice. Wonderful as duolingo is:-)
For the tour of the Grotto d'azzuro, you have to pay through the nose-- a ferry from Sorrento (or Napoli) to Capri, then a fee to get onto a boat to take you there, then a floating cash collection station takes two fees; one for the tour and one for the preservation society (or something like that), so it's a total of around 90 Euros per person for about a five minute visit inside the grotto.
I would do it again, in a heartbeat. You get serenaded by your boatman inside the grotto and, even though it is dark, it is gorgeous. The water is so warm when you dip a hand in, and the color is spectacular. It was worth it, for a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Then you go back into town and have Insalata Caprese-- tomatoes, basil, and fresh mozzarella + oil and maybe balsamic vinegar if you're lucky.
Yes, Maby. Absolutely love it. We had a week in Naples and used it as base for exploring the area, including Capri, the Amalfi coast and Pompei. I also loved Naples and would do it all again. Am now planning for our next trip the year after next and am trying to decide whether to have a week in Tuscany or a week in the lake district. So many nice areas to choose from.
The seas were too rough for us to even try to get to the Blue Grotto. As it was, we had to rescue the passengers from a smaller boat that couldn't make it back to port. The little bit of a boat ride we had was well worth it!
yes…losing the streak feels like a loss….So please have some more gelato and live it up!
Wonderful - enjoy the experience, the perfect place to practice your Italian!
Aha, we said you'd be fine and your Italian is great! :) I am glad to know you are doing great and wish you the even better experience in next 10 days. :))
Ahh--how wonderful that would be! We were with a tour group and had to stay with them. Next time??
Glad you're having a great time, Julia, and that your Italian is being of benefit on your journey! Thanks so much for the report, and have a great rest of your trip.
That's so great! You're a lucky one, going to Italy... dreamy eyes...
Enjoy, practice, eat a looooooot of awesome things and practice some more! (and tell us all how it is...)
That's awesome Julia! And I hope you REALLY enjoy Capri! I went to an island similar named Ponza, and I know you're going to love it :)
And hey, you're practicing Italian! Now you can use what Duo's been teaching you! Buon viaggio!
I went to Italy 4 years ago. it is such a wonderful place. when I came back my mum insisted that I go to Italian school on Saturdays. I still go to this day (BTW before you start juding me take into note that I am 15)
Haha. you must have noticed nobody uses or expects you to use 'lei' instead of 'tu'. Just the way duo teaches it. :)
Sounds wonderful. We are starting to work on our itinerary for a trip to Italy next fall
I'm looking forward to losing my streak when we visit Italy next year. Enjoy the rest of your trip!
