Is there an audible difference between "they are the police" and "it is the police"?

To my American ears, "de" sounds like "dee" and "det" sounds like "day".

The difference between "de" and "det" is certainly audible to Danes. The e in "de" sounds like a regular Danish i (as in "vi").

De sounds like "dee", and det sounds much like "dare".

Why not "this is the police?"
