The best gelato in Italy is...
My favorite was in Verona. I had "Romeo" and "Giulietta" flavors. Romeo was dark chocolate, caramel, and crushed roasted peanuts, and Guilietta was vanilla with chocolate sauce, and whole roasted hazelnuts.
This isn't my photo, but it does look like what I found there:
In Roma, my favorite place was right beside the Trevi fountain. I had an excellent stracciatella (vanilla gelato with "solid" chocolate viens) there, and was told afterward that that flavor was the most popular with the local Romans.
In Firenze, we went in search of a place that was supposed to sell lemon and sage gelato, but never did find it. The best I got was near the Ponte Vecchio, on the old city side. I probably ordered a chocolate of some sort.
In Sorrento, we had Baccio (hazelnut) down by the ferry terminal. Yum.
In Milano, I had a combination of Coconut and Limone. Quite decent.
Nothing beat the stuff in Verona, for me, though.
We had homemade pistacchio liqueur (!) in Amalfi, along with homemade limoncello. Both would have been about 80 proof (40% alcohol).
The pistacchio liqueur was icy cold, green, and thick, but OMG was it ever good. We bought a bottle and hauled it around for ten days befopre bringing it home. All gone now; I guess I'll need to go back!
Never in my life have I eaten such a delicious desert as gelato :( I heard it was healthier than ice cream.
Strawberry was my to go to flavor, I loved the strawberry Gelato. When my family was in Italy we got gelato twice a day. After lunch and after dinner. :p Now I want gelato!!
The nice part is that since you do so much walking, you don't gain weight when you eat gelato twice a day.
I love ice cream but I couldn't get enough gelato over there.
Oh, you're making me miss Italy so much! I was only there for a short time, but I remember there being an abundance of Gelato everywhere, the Stracciatella was amazing.
Limone e meloni mescolati insieme a Capri! A Firenze non ricordo il sapore, ma in un gelateria vicino Ponte Trinita in Oltra Arno
The one I ate at the Piazzale Michelango in Firenze last May... _ Stracciatella is the best flavor!
