Knowing when to use "zijn" or "hebben" with present perfect

I feel as though the subject explains my conundrum. I read the description, and it says that the zijn verbs are less common - and I see geweest and gegaan use zijn... is there an easy way to know when to use zijn and when to use hebben?

Or is it like getting to Carnegie Hall, and I just need to practice, practice, practice?

Hi Becky, there is a bit more information here, at the end. A lot of the time, verbs that use "zijn" are intransitive verbs (i.e. they don't have an object) that describe a change in condition.
