What is the little flame icon?

Yes, I'll admit, I haven't been on for a while, and a lot has changed. But what is that little flame next to some people's names?

Consecutive days you were active on Duolingo.

Do you lose your flame when you miss a day?

it means how many days you have practiced or received skill points in a row.

In my version (Android) it's a 'having reached today's xp-goal'-indicator. It's either gray or orange.

Unless you mean the flame you see next to the names here, with the number of days of the streak next to it. Then ziggKogg gave the right answer.

It seems like they have changed it so that you don't need to meet your daily goal, only do a single unit. This is a terrible change.
