Selections under Translations have disappeared.
Just since (for me) yesterday, nearly all of the choices have disappeared under many of the categories under Translations. Most of the categories I've checked (for example, Science, Literature, Movies) now show only two choices, instead of the long scrolling lists that I had up until a couple of days ago. If this is a glitch, please fix it soon! If it is a conscious design change, please change it back! I am dependent on the wide selection in order to find articles that are sufficiently interesting to spend the time translating, and if I can't find any, it could easily drive me away from Duolingo. See also the current discussion under "Spanish" on the "filler/fluff/crap" problem in Duolingo documents.
Yes, so do I, because once I finish translating the various items I've "saved," I'll probably quit using Duolingo unless the selection for translation improves. There simply isn't sufficient incentive to translate the (mostly out of date) "filler/fluff/crap." It doesn't interest me, and by and large I don't learn anything from translating it, so why would I?
@xoviat A lot of them hadn't been translated - I came across quite a few just in the health and fitness section that I was going through before everything got removed, which either only had one paragraph done, or hadn't been done at all. Now everything older than a couple of months seems to have just disappeared. I've already mentioned this in the Spanish section but I was enjoying going through some of the older stuff.
Because they haven't got rid of them, they simply removed them from the selections. To me, it feels like a manipulative move on their part, to try to channel us toward translating articles that they see as more central to their business model, which is apparently the filler/fluff/crap. I hope I'm wrong about this, but I can't think of any other explanation.
Also now at least for me the 'recently added' section for translations seems to have gone haywire, either going for hours with no documents being added at all or several come at once, only to disappear an hour later, then today everything is a jumbled mess with articles that were put up weeks or months ago at the top of the section, some of them duplicated. I don't know what the heck is going on but I wish they would sort it out - and bring back all of the older stuff that went missing at the same time! :-(
I'm sad to say that the recent changes to available translations has driven me away from Duolingo. This past Wednesday was the first day since I started using Duolingo three months ago that I haven't completed my stack of "gold coins." In fact, I've only translated a tiny handful of sentences since then, in the articles that I had already "saved." And in my Stream, I watch the very active translators that I follow (and admire) scraping the bottom of the barrel: translating articles that they can still link to from the steams of people they follow, or searching for Wikipedia articles that aren't about soccer players..... It's very disheartening, and I've lost all incentive to use Duolingo, although, at least for the moment, I check once a day to see if the situation has changed. If it doesn't change soon, I'll probably stop checking.
