Is Duolingo Spanish from Spain?
I was wondering which dialect of Spanish the Duolingo course is mostly based on? I notice it is represented by the Spanish flag. Is it European Spanish then?
It is a 'neutral' version that accepts, but does not teach, peninsular Spanish peculiarities. It also uses, pretty much, Latin American pronunciation. Gracias is not graTHias, for example.
It's general Latin American Spanish. This has been explained a lot on the forums already, but since it's a general form of Spanish, they went with Spain as the origin of the language because picking any individual Latin American country wouldn't be an accurate representation.
