"El guardia"

In the sentence, "Él habla con el guardia", why does guardia have a masculine article when it ends with a?

Thanks!

Some words are exceptions to the -o = masculine and -a = feminine rule. You'll just have to learn those. For example: El día, la mano, la foto (because it came from la fotografía which does end in a), el mapa.
