For world cup songs, Deichkind's "Ich habe eine Fahne" needs mentioning. http://www.videoup.net/v/qmvzka1iq-deichkind-ft-das-bo-ich-hab-eine-fahne-official-video/

I second the Rammstein recommendation

Firstly, because I like them. And second and foremost, because they have repetitive simple lyrics which are perfect for learning. Or maybe I'm just saying that because the first time I had a listening exercise in German, it was to the lyrics of "Asche zu Asche" xD

I've been listening to Rammstein for years, but I recently asked this same question on another forum and found a couple others that I like (I don't know Silbermond so I don't know if it's like them at all). Peter Fox is one that I like . . . and . . . I'm blanking on the other all of the sudden! I'll come back and comment again if I can remember it!

Madsen! That's the one! Granted I've only listened to one of their songs, (Du Schreibst Geschichte) but I like it! :P I suppose I should listen to more before recommending them, eh?

SEEED! Peter Fox (ok, he's in SEEED), Wir sind Helden, and Kinderlieder. There are more bands, but those are the ones that spring to mind first.

I would definitely recommend Einsturzende Neubauten and Grauzone. Einsturzende neubauten is the band that laid the foundations for the Industrial genre and grauzone is a Swiss (they sing in german) new wave band from the eighties. Have fun.

Bands that sing in German: Eisbrecher, Elis (from Leichtenstein rather than Germany), Faun, In Extremo, Letzte Instanz, Megaherz, Oomph, Schandmaul, Subway to Sally, Unheilig. I listen to a fair few others but they sing in English, ... or don't have a vocalist. :P

I just started learning German, but Marteria is great! I like a lot of his songs and he is pretty well known. Here is a link to one of my favorite songs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jNNxafXJQc0. Others I listen to are Deichkind, Alligatoah, and you probably know it already but I really like the song 99 luftballons by Nena.

Here are all the German bands currently in my playlist. Some of them have already been mentioned in this thread.

I enjoy German metal, so of course I listen to Rammstein. Duh. :) Incidentally, I think the video for Mein Land is the funniest they ever did. Especially Till Lindemann acting like David Hasselhoff in Baywatch. I just wish they hadn’t included the faux modern bit at the end. But I guess they felt they had to, for the people who didn’t get the joke. Rammstein – Amerika http://youtu.be/NteVmdoo1yI Engel http://youtu.be/VS07GMUcoaI Mein Land http://youtu.be/NNNR8UX7oKk

I’ve been listening to Unzucht a lot lately. These two songs have been resonating with me. Unzucht – Mit Dir Oder Ohne Dich http://youtu.be/a3L5olceN_M Nur die Ewigkeit http://youtu.be/PBe8C9EZrR4

Other neue deutsche Härte bands I listen to. Actually, Stahlmann doesn’t appeal to me as much as the others for some reason, but they make the list. Heldmaschine – Weiter http://youtu.be/z86tMU7oGM8 Eisbrecher – Verrückt http://youtu.be/yjO1bMHbDpY Megaherz – Menschmaschine http://youtu.be/N8fp6JEi8Xs Oomph! – Träumst Du http://youtu.be/FsbivRpEiS4 Stahlmann – Schwarz http://youtu.be/t0u3aXuBVD8

“Käpt’n Rummelsnuff” has a completely different musical style to any other artist I listen to, but his music is surprisingly endearing. His songs range from silly to serious to sentimental. He got his start by posting homemade music videos on YouTube, and built up a cult following. Rummelsnuff – Brüder http://youtu.be/qkTRamZ0PsQ Bratwurstzange http://youtu.be/wLX4NYrW1bI Trägt die Woge dein Boot http://youtu.be/Mw6HMaGk6T4

Then there’s the incomparable Nina Hagen. I like her early stuff best. Nina Hagen – Unbeschreiblich Weiblich http://youtu.be/5lYggk_vlEA Schachmatt http://youtu.be/RsUFsvVi654

I like some Faun for a change of pace. Faun – Diese Kalte Nacht http://youtu.be/zr8d9sXioj4

For some reason I enjoy Falco’s German pop. Don’t ask me why. Falco – Der Kommissar http://youtu.be/dUdK87LWHeg

This band is a guilty pleasure. My inner critic says they stepped out of the ‘80s and take the vampire shtick way too far. But I enjoy them. :) Blutengel – Reich mir die Hand http://youtu.be/w1G-9WUgptY

The following bands each have just one song I like. But I like hearing that one song now and then.

Nena has done a number of versions of this, her greatest hit. This is my favorite. Nena – 99 Luftballons http://youtu.be/k22NML9dpe0

I like this version of the song better than Rammstein’s. Mina Harker Laibach – Ohne Dich http://youtu.be/n5gplo4Mqyg

This is actually an American band, but they did a rendition of Die Gedanken Sind Frei which I like. It is an old song which has a lot of meaning for me, and has been performed by lots of artists. I have other versions in my playlist too, but I'll just list this one. Brazilian Girls – Die Gedanken Sind Frei http://youtu.be/MwBkLgLZz1k

Finally, a song that isn’t even in standard German. But I think you’ll see the appeal. :) Haindling – Bayern des Samma Mir http://youtu.be/2u46SBmLh9o
