Could this also be 'the police will follow the men'? (I ask a lot of questions, sorry :p )

The police is "a polĂcia". O policial refers to a person who is a policeman in the same way as "o engenheiro" refers to someone who is an engineer. I could be wrong but I think "O policial" indicates that it is a policeMAN and "A policial" would indicate that it is a policeWOMAN, but hopefully a native speaker can confirm this.

In spoken language that's used, but when writing it's necessary to use policial feminina.

PT-PT or PT-BR? Never seen this kind of phrasing here in Brazil. "a policial" is just fine in written language here.

Thanks, I think I should stop checking things against google translate :p - it doesn't seem very accurate.

I think just "officer" would be accepted.
