Coach: warning about your streak (or "How I lost my 303 day streak")

So this is not indicated anywhere, but if you set a coach goal and don't meet it, your streak does not extend. For example, say you get 10 points, but your coach goal is 30 points: you do not extend your streak until you get 30 points.

This should be made clearer. I just lost my 303 day streak because I had set a 50-point goal but did not gain 50 points on my second day of having the coach. I'm not that happy (but I'm a little relieved... maintaining that steak while trying to write a thesis was getting stressful...)

I sympathise with you - wow that is dreadful! Losing ones streak due to a misunderstanding - I almost did the same. Fortunately I saw that the streak had not been ticked even after I did some practice (as I had not reached my goal. Upon querying I discovered your problem - so I had the chance to correct it - bring my goal back to 1.

You should request your streak be restored, as there is no explanation as to how the new system works - nor a WARNING ABOUT THE RISK OF GOING TOO HICH ....

Best of luck!

You may be relieved, but it probably wouldn't hurt to email Support, they should (in my opinion) return the streak of users who didn't realize the way 'coach mode' works.

Agreed - its only luck that got me through this one safely!

I completely understand you. I've just lost my 57 day streak because of this new feature, and I'm really frustrated about this. My streak has kept me motivated and even forced me to practice when I didn't have the time for it, which I was eventually greatful for.

I really hope the mods will give us our streaks back.

I lost my 57 day streak, I can't imagine how I would feel like had it been 303. But nonetheless, you should keep learning!

Be careful to differentiate between moderators and administrators. Moderators do not have any way to do what you are suggesting.

To your other point, let me see if that was explained in bchan's official announcement. If not, you'll have a case.

Edit: It's mentioned in the post that the goal becomes the threshold for streak extension (paraphrase from here). Now, that's not explained in the actual set-up for the goal, I believe (which is silly, considering everyone doesn't read the discussion forums), so send in a ticket to Support and see if they can do anything. That's why I've only set mine to 1.

I'm sorry Alexis, but I disagree that you only "have a case" if bchan's discussion explained it (which it does btw).
First people shouldn't have to rely on the discussion boards to get this type of info. A simple warning when you enact Coach would be a lot more effective.
Second, and much more importantly, the official announcement didn't come out until yesterday, a full day after coach on the web was introduced. This means plenty of people had time to lose their streaks before they had any idea how Coach on the web really worked.
Lastly, it really isn't that far fetched for users of the app to assume the behavior of Coach on website would act similar to Coach app, where losing your coach streak has no effect on your overall streak.

Don't be sorry; I didn't think about that until after the fact when I went to see the post, which is why I said what I said in my edit. :)

I completely agree with you. I visit the discussion section sometime, but only the one regarding the german course. I think it was their responsibility to mention this in the set-up. I have sent a ticket to support, hopefully they will be able to do something about it. Thanks!

Completely. It could've been something similar to the pop-up in Immersion for new translators in that course. The whole thing would have been much less confusing for many (as even the ones who first heard about the feature were confused on that point).

Now, if you don't hear anything back within several days, visit bchan's profile (the administrator that posted about the feature in the discussion), write a quick message with your support ticket number included, and that may help speed things along for you.

I had not seen BChan's note at all until I followed your link - nor would I normally! I am learning languages, not developing apps! I guess most of us are like that - we do not expect developments to 'bite us in the backside' when there are no explanations.

Saying that it is covered in a post somewhere is just no help to most of us language learners.

Any warning should be WHERE THE USER CAN SEE IT DIRECTLY BEFORE ACTIVATING IT!!!

Sorry, I really did not know the difference. I don't know who bchan is and I haven't read his/hers announcement... If you decide not to give us our streaks back, you guys should at least add some sort of notice when the new feature first pops up at the main screen.

Thanks for your quick reply =]

AlexisLinguist is just a user like you and me, who volunteered to do some helpful work in the forums and has a few extra buttons in the web interface that help him [edited: sorry, her] to do so. I am pretty sure that this doesn't include buttons for changing users' streaks.

Admins, on the other hand, are employed by Duolingo and can ultimately do almost everything (it appears), although some things are probably easier for them than others, and not all of them may be able to do everything. Bchan is an admin and seems to be responsible for this feature. I guess bchan is more likely to notice your complaint if you put it in bchan's thread. On the other hand, there are already quite a few related complaints there.

*her. :)

Yep, that's about it. Admins have a whole system the can go into with details about every user account. Moderators do not have those capabilities.

Ooops. And I actually tried to make all references to this fellow bear(?) gender neutral...

I'm not associated with my picture. It just happened to be the only thing I had for a suitable profile picture at the time. :)

I logged some points after midnight and a couple hours ago and the Day Streak didn't change so I set the Coach to 1. I cannot remember when I logged points yesterday. I am at a loss as to what time I should log in today! Help me, please! I don't want to lose my Day Streak! Thanks!

October 9, 2014

Follow the countdown on the main lesson screen. It tells you how many hours you have left. :)

Thanks for your reply, AlexisLinguist! I'm paranoid about my Day Streak! It motivates me to log in every day! It gives me a sense of accomplishment!

October 9, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/NancyMihalich

It says 13 hours. If I don't log in at midnight, will I lose my streak?

October 9, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/AlexisLinguist

That means you have 13 hours until a new day starts, when you can earn more XP to extend your streak. :)

hi Germaron, you have a 57 day streak TODAY, that's a funny coincidence!

Mine was 400+ days :S

I don't know - it's almost freeing. I sent support a message, but if they don't restore it, I think I'll be OK :)

OOoh, so THAT'S what happened to my streak! I set a coach goal for 30 points and yesterday I was busy and the Internet connection was lousy, so I managed only three points. Today I discovered my three points weren't credited and my streak (such as it was) was gone! And also I lost my 7-day wager. So what's the incentive for setting coach goals? Seems the punishment for failure is severe!

Edit: OK, when I started getting points today, my three points from yesterday came back. Nice! But my streak, no, it's gone forever. Well at least it was a short one, only about 2 weeks. Still it would have been nice to receive an advance warning about the consequences of failing to meet the coach goal.

Thanks for telling us this. I had my goal set at 50 and didn't realise I could lose my streak, so I've just changed it to 10. Duolingo should have made this clear.

I had completed two trees and achieved a 90 day streak without ever setting an XP goal. Today I put both trees back to all gold with 200 XP's yet the streak did not advance to 91. I then set the coach for 1 XP/day, did an exercise in Spanish and Italian to generate some XP's ( 2 lingots) and still no change in the count for the streak.

Writing this a day later, it's now working. All's well.

This should have been made clear in the first place. I opted for that stupid coach and had my, albeit more modest, streak stolen by Duolingo.
