De quiénes es ?
A question asked 'whose horse is this?' and i checked both 'de quién es el caballo' and 'de quiénes es el caballo', but the second one was wrong. I thought maybe it should have been 'son', but when I googled it, 'de quiénes es' seemed to be used. What did I do wrong? Thank you for your help!
Hi Florinda. I am just a beginner in Spanish, but could the answer to your question be that they use 'es' rather than 'son' because 'caballo' is singular? Perhaps if the question were asking about 'caballos' we should use son? I am just guessing and I am going to follow your question for the correct answer. Thank you!
Florinda, you were right. "¿De quién es el caballo?" means "whose horse is this?". This assumes that the owner is a single individual. "¿De quiénes es el caballo?" translates the same way into English, but assumes that the owners are more than one individual. Justome is correct that the es/son issue has to do with one horse (es) or more than one horse (son).
