Why do you want to learn Portuguese?

I'm just curious :D

Hmm, well. I've studied Spanish and French since high school, so Portuguese was always something I could sort of but not entirely read. Then the World Cup happened, and I started seeing more of it around, and I got tired of only understanding half of what I was looking at!

I have a friend who's been on Duolingo for about a year or more now, so I came over to check it out to see if there was any Portuguese, and obviously there was, and it was really an ideal way for me to pick up the grammar and get a better understanding of where it's similar to Spanish and where it's different. So I've stuck with it. =)

Similar reasons for me. I'm a languages teacher at a Secondary school and I teach French and Spanish. When the World Cup was on I was trying to understand the Brazilian footballers' tweets so realized how similar a language it is. I've found it really easy and it's the language I do most often on here, it's easy to pronounce and the grammar isn't too complicated. Hopefully might get to go to the Rio Olympics e praticar um pouco de português :D

I am learning Portuguese because my girlfriend is from Brazil, and nobody else in her family speaks English. If I want to speak with her family when we visit I either have to learn, or she has to translate. It also gets me lots of points as a good boyfriend.

Same with my in-laws. All it takes is me saying, "Tudo. E vocé?" and they think I'm the most charming guy on the planet.

So we can communicate with Portuguese speaking people, so we can understand Portuguese people, so we can teach other people Portuguese and Vice Versa, and also, learning another language of any kind in my opinion is impressive.. :)

I am a first generation Canadian with Portuguese heritage. I never properly learned the language. When people talk to me in Portuguese I do understand what they are saying to me, but my verbal and composition skills are poor and with Duolingo I can improve myself.

Because:

  1. It is a language that you can realistically teach yourself (with Duo's aid) if you already speak spanish
  2. It sounds pretty
  3. Brazil is home to over 200 million people, with interesting politics and culture, and a country whose importance to the global economy and international politics will grow in the future
  4. While not as widespread as French or Spanish, Portuguese also gives you access to Portugal, and parts of southern Africa
  5. My crew of street racing car thieves is about to go straight, but we have just one last job to pull off in Rio...

I know it's not the first language people choose but I was hooked on the language after the world cup and the music and culture of brasil is awesome just wished there was more quality free resources on the net. compared to French and spanish it's pretty poor

For myself, I started out loving Hispanic music in general which led me into Marengae and bachata. Now I love bossa nova music. I chose to learn Portuguese because its sexy first off! But I love their music and culture. I now want to be able to communicate with Brazilians. I was never into another language just cause I'm already Korean and learning that itself was a bit of a pain but its a part of me now. Learning a new language also gets your brain going and its FUN, to think, by the end you'll be able to talk with a Brazilian person...who knows... in BRAZIL!!

Hi! Your Portuguese is really good, but I will make a correction: "lengua" is in Spanish and "língua" is in portuguese! Kisses! (Sorry by the errors, I'm learning English).

Your English is good! Just remember that we don't use the word "kisses" like that in English - we only use it when we're actually talking about kisses, not as a greeting. And also, remember to always write different languages with capital letter. Therefore: Portuguese :)

October 19, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/Durlydurl

I disagree. I am American born and raised, and I see (and hear) people signing off with "kisses!" all the time. It is equal to saying: "love to you!" or "XOXOXO!" (hugs and kisses).

My wife's family comes from the Azores. Growing up in the USA, she was discouraged from learning Portuguese because her family wanted her to be "all American." Now, we want to visit the Azores and Brazil. Since she hasn't yet tried learning Portuguese, I thought I'd try out duolingo and surprise her with what I've learned, so maybe she'll try learning on duolingo. I also do some business remotely with Brazil and would like to speak their language for a change rather than requiring them to know English. It's also a fascinating language. My brief language experiences have been in French and German. Portuguese is refreshingly different.

It's because I'm planning on studying abroad in the Universidade de Coimbra. Also, because I'm in love with the language. The way it sounds, the way you write it, and all the impressive material culture related to the Portuguese language.

I am a volunteer teacher of English as a second language (ESL) and I've worked with a lot of people from Brazil. Most of my students are Spanish speakers so I studied Spanish first. It helps me ( and them) if I can speak some of their language.

I've got a Brazilian friend, and I want to surprise him someday with, if not fluency, at least moderate skill in his native language. Also, Portuguese is seriously underrated when it comes to its beauty. I know because I've been guilty of underrating it too. But thanks to my friend and Duolingo, not anymore.

Hi, I'm learning Brazilian Portuguese because it's the language of capoeira and I have some Brazilian friends :-).

October 12, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/JCMcGee

Someone reminded me of Capoeira 6 months ago...I love it, but as a beginner at my age (44) it's killing me! My instructor is amazing and a lovely guy Boneco Desouza...from Bahia...he runs the Brighton...our group is called "Menino Queem Foi Seu Mestre"*....look us up.

I was a judo and boxing coach half my life...and this guy really is great! * I was all "Yeah...I know what that means!" when I first saw this...but Bonecco mainly laughs when I speak Portuguese to him!

October 18, 2014

https://www.duolingo.com/lolomanc

No way!!! I know Boneco a little and he prob knows me a lot less! I started capoeira with Rilene (and Amazonas) just over 3 years ago when I was living in London. They are all amazing capoeiristas, and you'll learn so much from him.

Btw, as someone who's no spring chicken herself, I hope you keep at it because before you know it, you'll realise you don't hurt as much anymore!

Ah...que mundo pequeno :-)

I too am learning Portuguese because I'm studying Capoeira. I'm hoping that, with a little more vocabulary under my belt, I'll have an easier time remembering the lyrics to the songs (and improvising words when the official ones run out). I've occasionally thought that a Capoeira bonus skill with song lyrics and technique names would be fun to have.

i picked portuguese because i have a brazilian friend on facebook whose posts are mostly in portuguese and i liked the way it "looked" - all the h's everywhere seemed rather attractive and flowery. also i found that with my english and french knowledge, i could understand a pretty good percentage of her posts while reading, so it seemed like i would already have a head start on it rather than starting at the very beginning, which was pretty encouraging. additionally i like the sound of portuguese better than spanish, which is one of the others i was thinking of.

I had to learn the basics for my student exchange in Brazil.

I had a great time and fell in love with the place: samba, capoeira, churascaria, caipirinha, fired bananas, sugarcane juice, havaianas...

I want to go back some day to see more and be fluent next time. I want to understand Cesaria Evora and , read Paolo Coelho in the original and watch 'Cidade de Deus' or 'Rei do gado' without subtitles.

Basiclly I want to understand the culture from the inside.

I started studying Portuguese for few reasons. Since 2010 half of my class have studied french and had some 'friend school' in Portugal. I pretended I hate Portuguese and Portugal but I didn't really (haha) and last year some Portuguese students came to my school and it made me more interested in Portuguese language. This year was World Cup in Brazil. It took thoughts about learning this language to my mind again. And because I have few years dreamed about going to study abroad I thought Brazil would be amazing(for many reasons!), but my mother said I can't go there if I don't know any Portuguese and I started to find any courses to learn it and because in my homeland I didn't find so I checked if there is in duolingo something and now I am studying it on my own. Sorry for this novel but I had to tell everyone! Hope you start learning Portuguese to, this is fascinating language! :)

I speak Spanish and English and I wanted to learn another language. Portuguese is similar with Spanish therefore is somewhat easy for me to understand. I also would like to go to a missions trip and in some country in Africa they do speak Portuguese.

I google this info: "The Portuguese-speaking African countries (also referred to as Lusophone Africa) consist of five African countries in which the Portuguese language is an official language: Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique and São Tomé and Príncipe."
