How Does the Coach Feature Impact Streaks
So I logged in today to see that I have lost my streak. I am not to thrilled about that as I clearly did a lesson yesterday, and this has been sufficient for continuing my streak for the last 300 days I've been here. I also had a streak freeze, but apparently it is gone, I'm guessing it didn't think I did my lesson the day before either.
So the only thing that I can deduce is that even though I've done a lesson and got my 10+XP that because I didn't do the 30XP that was setup under coach that it didn't consider me as having done anything.
If that's the case, then that's pretty ridiculous. The coach feature appeared a week ago with absolutely no indication of how it works or what to expect from it. I clicked around on it and set a goal thinking I would like to do more than the min (I've been slacking the last few weeks) but at no point did it tell me that my streak was now based on that value. Not cool Duo.
I also find it really weird that I got no sort of alert or notification from the system that yesterday I had not completed my goal. What's the point of having a coach if your coach is sleeping on the job? There also seems to be no notification that a streak freeze was used, having just bought it three or four days ago after the previous one went missing I would have thought I'd be covered if I missed a day. And lastly, why do we get no sort of notification that our streak has been broken?
Thankfully I had already broken my 272 day streak when I was on vacation a couple of weeks back and was only up to 10 days or else I'd be furious. But when this coach feature showed up I thought it'd be a great way to remotivate me after losing the streak, instead it has done nothing but leave me frustrated.
There was a forum post by a Duolingo staff member about the online coach feature that mentioned that your streak doesn't get extended unless you met the coach goal, but the post wasn't stickied and disappeared quite quickly, so a lot of people didn't see it.
As a good rule of thumb, it's not a bad idea to always look at your streak flame before the end of the day and make sure it has the green checkmark to show that you've extended your streak.
There was a post by Bchan explaining the coach and its impact on the streaks. But I guess relatively few people have read it.
I'm not a part of the test group myself, so it doesn't affect me. Still, I can definitely see where Duo's latest communications failure would be rather frustrating to those in the test group.
Relying on a message board post (non-sticky, no less) for this sort of thing is just a bad idea. A tiny percentage of users use the forums, a smaller portion still check in daily and would have had the opportunity to see the message before it got buried under the last couple of days worth of posts. I believe the message wasn't posted until the day after the AB test was pushed to users, so it wasn't particularly useful even if they did see it. That's no way to notify users of a significant change like this that can adversely affect users' streaks. A message should have been pushed to everyone in the test group like what's used when the tree is modified (the "notice something different" message).
It's still a shoddy way of communicating a change like this. Too few Duo users use the forum for this to be their primary means of explaining this. It needed to be pushed to users directly like tree modifications. It's just shabby communication from Duo yet again.
I'm running out of alternatives to "itt" in a couple of words in this post.
It needs work. Agreed. It's better than it not being there. Full instructions attached to the feature would be ideal. But, I'm not going to slap people for an improvement on a bad situation. Though, pointing out where improvements could happen isn't something I'd leave out.
Edit: But then, I'm not a person who improves with negative criticism, though some people are. Too much of that and I shut down. I tend to thrive on positive feedback that includes mention of areas for improvement. Maybe DL staff are different from me though.
Another ideal situation would be if they restore lost streaks once the test is over to everyone who lost them in reparation.
Anyhow, the sticky came back after I messaged bchan. Maybe if you messag that person they will put instructions on the feature itself. Worth a shot.
I had no idea and most of the people probably have no idea as well. Such crucial information shouldn't be included in some random post in the discussion. I am glad I didn't turn on the coach... The changes done on the website lately are becoming annoying.
Same thing happened to me, and I only understood why after reading a post in the Troubleshooting section. Now what I want to know is, since the a coach can inflict punishment (you lose your streak if you miss the daily goal even once), what is the corresponding award if you DO reach the daily goal over a period of time?
Agreed 100% percent, i lost my fifty-day streak because of the coach feature but it's just a number. Besides my streak isn't really over if i practice for the day outside of duo, so to me my streaks still alive and kickin'. I have a bigger prob with not being able to see my xp to my next level. Don't sweat the streak but i feel your frustration. I still love you duo!
What bothers me most after losing my 98-day streak and learning why a few days later from these discussion posts is that DL does not respond to any emails or offer any explanation for not notifying those who use(d) the coach feature about losing a streak if a goal is not met.
is this the phone app or the web? I use mainly the web version and I dont see anything about a coach feature, unless it's in beta testing in a sub-group
They are AB testing it, which is different from a beta test.
When a feature is released for AB testing, all the bugs are supposed to be worked out.
This happened with me too! Except my streak was 10 XP because over the past few weeks I was doing 50+XP. When I checked the tracker it said that I DID do it yesterday. I was up to 126 and then it suddenly dropped to 0.
