Spanish TV now with SubTitles

Hopefully this might be of use for those studying Spanish -

I don't know if this topic has come up before, but I have noticed that Spanish TV is now making some of its programs available with subtitles. RTVE has been on the web for quite a while, but without subtitles I found it virtually impossible to understand - with subtitles there is much more chance of following it (even then they do go at quite a speed !).

Two series I have found that are subtitled are: Red Eagle (aguila roja) : http://www.rtve.es/alacarta/videos/aguila-roja/

and Isabella: http://www.rtve.es/television/isabel-la-catolica/capitulos-completos/

In both cases, it just the latest series that are subtitled.

And for those who enjoy traditional music and songs from Las Canarias. Tenderete programs are also subtitled. http://www.rtve.es/alacarta/videos/tenderete/

On Netflix there is Gran Hotel, 3 seasons with subtitles. I finished it first with subtitles and then turned them off and watched again. Also there are more Spanish shows on Hulu, actual shows from Spain. Already mentioned Isabella and Red Eagle, as well as Gran Reserva.

You can also watch novelas on dramafever.com. All their shows have subtitles.

Thank you so much for these links. This is going to help me tremendously! I have been struggling with watching spanish tv without subtitles on a daily basis, and feeling somewhat disheartened. I have a small collection of dvd's with spanish subtitles and revert to watching these in my frustration! For me, I feel that I need a 'bridge' to support my understanding and listening skills..........those words just roll into each other at such a speed! I also love period drama of all eras, so these programmes are perfect. Whilst this is not a free resource, I can recommend the dvd dramatisation 'El tiempo entre costuras' (war time drama) :-)

I just read about "El tiempo entre costuras" and I would love to watch it. But it seems like it only exists with Spanish subtitles, right? I fear that my Spanish is not good enough for that.

Hi Helen. I've just checked my box set and it appears that there are only spanish subtitles.......which is just what I need at the moment. I don't understand all of it by any stretch of the imagination.......but just love the story! I'm sure that I will watch it again and again, hopefully understanding more each time........it's worth it.

Thanks! Well, maybe I should give it a try after all. At least it will be easier with subtitles and I can even pause and look up important words in a dictionary.

I haven't watched it yet, but thanks for reminding me :). The English title is "The time in between" and I think you can watch it online, at least from the US.

I know of three places to watch the series with English subtitles in the USA.

Netflix just started showing it this month. Hulu has had it for a while.

(I'd go with Netflix if you have a choice. There are no ads on Netflix; Hulu makes you pay extra to get rid of ads. I've also had problems with subtitles getting out of sync on Hulu; a problem I haven't had on Netflix.)

And on the web, the site DramaFever.com offers it with ads without a subscription fee, along with many other Spanish-language telenovelas. (They have a paid subscription version that removes the ads.)

I liked the series well enough that I'd watch it again if I could find the videos with Spanish subtitles. If you like historical dramas, this one is very well done.

Thank you, Helen and mreaderclt. unfortunately I'm in Finland, not entitled to watch the US online videos. The good thing is I found it on a Chinese website with both Chinese and Spanish subtitles. Yeah! :D

Excellent. I have watched the first season of "Isabella" on Hulu with English subtitles.

But I tend to think that the Spanish subtitles would be a better learning exercise.

Closed Captioning on Spanish stations help too! I watch telenovelas on Telemundo with closed captioning. CC1 is Spanish, CC3 is in English. You can also watch them on telemundo.com with Spanish AND English subtitles!

Is there any way to watch Verano Azul with English subs?

https://www.duolingo.com/JeanPaul.Fr

Yes - just tried a random episode - http://www.rtve.es/alacarta/videos/verano-azul/verano-azul-capitulo-3-pancho-panza/2642295/ - and clicked the "Subt" button to get the subtitles.
