Why I actually like the coach feature

I know that there's been a lot of (extremely understandable) negative reaction to the coach feature. I can't even imagine how upset I would be if I lost my streak because of a miscommunication, especially if I actually had a respectable streak like many of you do. Now that the school year's started, keeping up with learning Portuguese on top of several AP classes and two foreign language classes has been difficult. Reaching Tier 2, which allows me to maintain my streak just by upvoting in Immersion, has made me extremely lazy. There were many days where I would just log in before going to bed and upvote a single translation to extend my streak by earning a single point. When coach was released, I decided to challenge myself with the 10XP option. Over the past few days, I've finally started moving forward in my lessons and learning a lot, even if it means staying up a few minutes late. Although I personally love the new feature, I still think it's important that the progress bar and number of words learned are brought back, as those were huge motivators. Also, one possibility with the streak issue could be gaining any amount of XP less than the goal preserves the streak, but does not extend it. Still, I think users should be given a choice and not forced to use the coach feature, although it's been perfect for my needs.

Actually, that's a great idea about letting any XP preserve the streak, but only meeting the coaches goal extends it.

I agree this could be the way to go. I don't think the staff is going to get rid of the coach but they also should take into account how important is streak for us users, and changing so it is every time easier for us to lose it does not make any sense and does not bring anything positive to the table.

Well put; I understand now why the team might have brought in the coach feature if that is what lots of people are doing, but we should have been warned about the potential to lose the streak and have the option to see progress and XP points. I'm just grateful that I read all the discussions here and decided not to initiate the coach feature because of the problems.

I agree. It's too easy to do one point or one exercise to extend your streak. I've been doing much more on the site since using the coach. I think people forget that, while the gamification is important for motivation, having a high streak isn't the reason we're really here. Learning a language is (or should be). I'd much rather do more to learn the language then doing the minimum to extend a meaningless streak.

You are right, but don't forget some of us have worked hard for our streaks! I really feel for those who have done so and lost it without warning because of the change.

I recently reached a 100-day learning streak only to break it the following day due to not having understood that a failed goal meant the streak was history. It irritated me quite a bit, since it was my first time reaching the hundred days ever since I joined the site but, as jfernatt says, even if the streak can serve as a motivator, we're all here to learn some language(s) so nobody's going to stop learning if their respective streaks happen to be reset for some reason, I believe.

Is there a case for splitting XP gained in lessons from those earned in immersion?
