Why is it not "la cerveza"?

La cerveza implies that it's the beer (probably right in front of the speaker) whereas 'cerveza' is beer in general. It's the same in English too. If you were to begin a sentence with beer as the subject then you'd need the 'La' in front. Hope this helps.
