What exactly is the difference between "vivere" and "abitare?"

"Abitare" means inhabiting or dwelling: it's much more used than its English counterparts when referring to where you usually spend the night. "Vivere" is more generic, and it's simply "to live". When speaking of where you live, they're basically synonyms.
