"sorry for being late" is what I would say in English.

The first "correct" solution, "Excuse the lateness", is not something anyone would EVER say in English. It is a machine transliteration of the Italian. English speakers would say "excuse my lateness" or, less formally, "sorry I'm late".

Oops, I just said that ("excuse the lateness") after seeing this for the first time. English is pretty much my one and only language, and I'm 35 years old. :D

"sorry I'm late" should work here...

I agree! that was my answer too.

Shouldn't "excuse me, I am late" be a correct response too then?

keep in mind, though that:
I am late = sono in ritardo

why not "sorry for delay"?

I think "sorry for the delay" is probably correct, but we have to remember that this is a computer program that sometimes insists on literal answers. i play this game as if i were taking a test in school--I don't try to be smart, or creative, or even think for myself--just get the right answer haha!

Or you could report it. We should teach the program. :)

Yeah, I'd say this is superior to school in that you can teach it to accept more appropriate answers :)

That has been the way that I deal with duolingo. Just the right answer.

I believe that 'excuse my tardiness' should also be accepted.

I wonder though if that would be

scusa il mio ritardo
