In British English we can say "different to" but Duolingo only accepts "different from".

I agree. Australians also say 'different to' and regard 'different from' as incorrect.

I am not certain we regard "different from" as incorrect, but "different to" is far more common.

I think it depends....I think maybe with proper nouns we tend to use "from"? I can't decide? Would we say "Jane is different to John"?

Or maybe we would just say "Brazil and Germany are different"

Different from is widely used if not more so - interesting to see it being regarded as incorrect in Australia.
