Schuler and student - whats the difference, please? Is Schuler a school age student?

Yes, a "Schüler" is a school-age student (grades 1-13). A "Student" is somebody who studies at a university or college (Fachhochschule).

We used to make the same distinction in English, calling people who study at lower levels "pupils" and calling those who in higher education "students".
