How many words does one need to know for ac

Hello everyone,

Before starting I would like to say that I do know it's a bit tricky to answer this question and unless one knows how to use them, knowledge of words doesn't mean much.

That being said, I was just wondering:

More or less, how many words does one need to know to be able to achieve a level of B2 or C1?

I'm not asking about achieving this level to pass a test but achieving this level of ability to use this language especially spoken but also written in general.

If you have any more inputs or insights on the subject I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you.

How many words, I don't know, but ...

See here: http://www.kmk.org/bildung-schule/auslandsschulwesen/deutsches-sprachdiplom.html

Then search for "Wortschatz" and you will find a pdf file "DSD Ausführungsbestimmungen ...". There are several tables explaining the different tests. For instance you could be supposed to understand a 500 word text. Now, how many words do you have to learn in order to be fairly sure to know just these 500 words?

You can also goole "Rahmenordnung über Deutsche Sprachprüfungen für das Studium an deutschen Hochschulen (RO-DT)"

Thank you kragi. Seems more complicated than it seems to have an answer to this question. Before starting to learn, I had no idea how complex and authentic, genuine the German language was.
