If we don't write "hen" is the sentence wrong? What does it mean exactly?

"Gå hen" is vaguely like "Go over", the additional word makes for a better rhythm, without it the sentence sounds a bit harsh (to me at least, and as far as interpretation is possible without context). Also, with "hen" the mother is probably in sight, not somewhere else, the speaker might be pointing at her.
