Bulgarian for duolingo
I'm interested in adding Bulgarian to duolingo. However, I don't want to do it if there are not going to be any people using the language so I was curious to see if anyone was interested in helping contribute (I have not started it yet) or learning the language.
YES! I am Macedonian Bulgarian and I would be elated to see a Bulgarian course on DL. I live in the diaspora and there are not many resources for learning Bulgarian. I see this as an important opportunity, to have a course here as it would be free and highly effective.
Bulgarian was the first written Slavic language and is spoken by 12 million people around the world. That alone should make Bulgarian a priority for DL. :p
Awesome idea! I'm British but currently studying medicine at a Bulgarian university (taught in English), and would love a Bulgarian Duolingo course.
Due to the high cost of studying medicine in Western Europe, and the scarcity of places, many international students (nearly 1000 a year) are studying in Bulgaria, unfortunately there's not a great deal of good textbooks or apps to learn Bulgarian, so a lot of students are graduating without having ever learned the language (which is a real shame!) I think Duolingo would really help generate interest in learning Bulgarian with the growing influx of students, so really hope it happens!
In the forum there is now a guide for the people who wish new courses in Duolingo - https://forum.duolingo.com/comment/15014194
In this guide, there are links to topics with requests for specific courses. The idea is, for each desired course there to be a single leading topic, which should get all the support (including votes) for the course.
So, they selected the following topics as leading for the requested courses related to Bulgarian language:
- the topic https://forum.duolingo.com/comment/3576880 for the course "English for Bulgarian speakers"
- the CURRENT topic (https://forum.duolingo.com/comment/5115906) for the course "Bulgarian for English speakers"
So, if you want to support these courses, give your votes and/or comments in these 2 topics - there they will be most effective!
Във форума вече има ръководство за желаещите нови курсове в Duolingo - https://forum.duolingo.com/comment/15014194
- темата https://forum.duolingo.com/comment/3576880 за курса "English for Bulgarian speakers"
I would like for Bulgarian to be on Duolingo. There are barely any websites and many of my relatives speak it, the only problem is i can't speak back due to the time i've spent away from it. I would love to have it on Duolingo so i can speak and master the grammar perfectly.
We're all non-Bulgarian speakers so we wouldn't be of much help with creating the course. I know that if there were a course, though, we'd definitely enroll.
We're on our semester break right now, but I think it would be worthwhile to bring this up with our students when we come back in February. They're all Bulgarian and they're really brilliant kids who would enjoy building this course. The only problem is that their time is at a premium between school and other commitments. I'll keep you posted.
Здравейте на всички! I am native Bulgarian and I'd like to contribute for adding Bulgarian language to Duolingo, because there are obviously peoply that are eager to learn it, aswell there are Bulgarian that want/need to learn English but don't have the money or time to spend in courses. However Duolingo is awesome platform for learning foreign languages due to being free and enabling to people to use it whenever they have free time to do so. Also it all depends on their own willingness and pace to learn the language. Just awesome these days!
Carry on! BC
It would be wonderful, if there was a Bulgarian for Ukrainian speakers course on Duolingo. :) How did you learn Bulgarian? Can you recommend me some websites?
Було б чудово, якби на Дуолінго був курс болгарської для українців. :) Як ти вивчив болгарську? Можеш порадити які-небудь сайти для її вивчення?
My point being, in a European country with 7 million people, there are about to be more than enough people who know English, well. And it's not like there are no Bulgarian immigrants in the US or UK. Most people want to see their language being represented, so among those who know both languages, there will be some who have the determination.
I just submitted an application in the Incubator describing how I'm super excited and super qualified to contribute to a Bulgarian course, and then I saw this topic is over 5 years old and nothing has been done... not encouraging! Hopefully we can make it happen together!
I really, REALLY would love to learn Bulgarian and I'm pretty desperate for a course here about it due to the possibility of working in Bulgaria. Duolingo has a teaching tactic that really works with me which other apps and such do not, (also I'm way too shy to use those where you get an actual person as a teacher) so this addition would be a life saver for me. Is there any knowledge of if and when this course will be available?
I've been living in Bulgaria for a few years now and found it hard to learn the language. Private tutoring is too expensive, most online courses are just about learning some word lists and since I'm working, having some day courses isn't an option as well.
Having taken the German course here, I'm really keen on the format of these courses and would love to see a Bulgarian course added here.
Don't know why with all this positive feedback to add this language for over 4 years now, why this course hasn't been added yet?
I know this is old ,but go for it Bulgarian is the only slavic language I think I can learn and I want to learn.
Hey! I've been following this topic for a while so I thought I'd post a quick reminder of how Duolingo picks new courses (https://forum.duolingo.com/comment/18949556) 1. Likes and comments help! The way Duolingo tracks these interactions is here -> https://forum.duolingo.com/comment/15014194 The main post to be upvoted for a Bulgarian course is this one -> https://forum.duolingo.com/comment/5115906 The main post to be upvoted for an English course for Bulgarian speakers is this one -> https://forum.duolingo.com/comment/3576880 2. The more people sign up for the incubator program, the better! There isn't currently any Bulgarian course in the incubator now but if enough volunteers sign up, that will absolutely help -> https://incubator.duolingo.com/ 3. I'm hoping that since there is now a Russian course on Duolingo, it will be easier to get another course using Cyrillic?
So.... I've seen a few new comments in this thread so I'm replying to one of my own very optimistic posts from last year. At first I was under the impression that maybe not enough people had signed up to the Incubator or that there were not enough likes in this thread (as if likes=magic) but it's clear to me now that people have been applying in the Incubator to contribute to the creation of the course for years. I've also seen quite a bit of interest in people taking a Bulgarian course. Maybe not enough interest for the Duolingo gods to notice? What I find very confusing is the complete lack of response from Duolingo. There has been no response on any social media platform when people have asked about a Bulgarian course, no response to this thread, no response to Incubator applications (at least no response to my application). It's clear that creating the course is not a priority but considering the thread is 6 years old... any response would be useful so more people don't waste their time applying in the Incubator. Since Duolingo is relying on volunteers so heavily and people have been applying to volunteer, it's quite disheartening to not get a response. Maybe close off applications for languages that aren't already in the Incubator if those applications are never going to be reviewed? PS I've also previously given Lingots to this thread, does that do anything at all or is it just a silly gimmick? Rant over :D
It is a strange thing, almost as if Duo is against Bulgarian. After so many years so many people applying and asking for it, they don't give an answer. There are courses for fictional languages, on the incubator there are courses on the making with 1 single contributor and languages with so little native speakers. It makes no sense not to mention the unfairness. It feels as if it is being done on purpose (ignoring us).
Bulgarian will be a great addition, not only that will help other nationalities to learn a rare language like Bulgarian. but this will help many Bulgarians learn a second language. Due to the years under the communist regime, our parents, uncles and aunts know only Russian and it's very hard for them to find their place in today's international, multi-language and predominantelly English-speaking world! I know many people who will love to use this app and who will love learning new languages in thsi new open, bigger, international and digital world. If your mission is "to give everyone access to a private tutor experience through technology", then Bulgarian (a slavic language of a country that's part of the EU but needs to develop economically due to historic reasons) is the way to go, Duo! I know people who would also love to help with this!
I so so so agree!! do you speak bg too? i've been keeping an eye on this thread for a while and it's sad that nothing's been done even though people have been showing interest on both sides (learning and making the course) for years.... I recently tried applying formally through the incubator but it didn't even let me submit which is so weird and tech didn't get back to me. your summary of its importance is perfect though - which makes what really sucks even worse, that actually useful languages needing this exposure don't seem to be supported enough by duolingo as a whole but fictional languages from scifi or fantasy books have made their way through the whole process and onto the app incredibly quickly in comparison
Hi, here is the application page: https://duolingo-incubator-web.duolingo.com/application. And these are the current courses in progress: https://incubator.duolingo.com/
The thread was started 2 years ago and it seems there are plenty of people willing to contribute and benefit from such a course. It would be helpful if DuoLingo at least releases a roadmap!
For those who are curious, here is a quick preview: http://www.omniglot.com/writing/bulgarian.htm
2 years later but i have to mention that Bulgarian is close enough to Russian lexically but not grammatically. Polish i think more close to Russian grammatically and not close to Bulgarian. It can help only to get the main idea of how group of Slavic languages works, i suppose, but not to better learn concretely Bulgarian. Успехов, тем не менее:) И я тоже хотела бы курс болгарского на Дуо.
I speak most Slavic languages. Bulgarian is among my weaker ones. I can get by but I'd love to improve my Bulgarian. (I've been a couple of times in Bulgaria and I loved it so I'm looking forward to interesting conversations and new Bulgarian friends).
Duolingo is not enough but it's a useful tool (because it's fun).

Yes :) I forgot to mention that I am a native bulgarian speaker and I was a teacher in primary school so at least for the basic level I have a lot of sentences and phrases ready to use. I am excited to help and in the summer I have a lot of free time. Hope this project works :)
There are already many applications in the incubator. I have applied myself, too. What I think we need now is to get some transparency on when a course will be scheduled in Duolingo.
Please, vote up the request for this here - https://www.duolingo.com/comment/16494611 . I will try to approach the Duolingo team with this request as soon as I have 50+ supporting votes.
My husband and I are interested in adopting internationally from Bulgaria, I have to say if they add this course it would be a huge blessing as Mondly and other courses out there for the language pale in comparison to the quality and ease of use that Duolingo and its course building volunteers provide! I do hope Duo gets a Bulgarian course :)
My sister lives in Bulgaria and I would like to learn it to communicate with her husband
Hey ya all. I would love to learn Bulgarian. My girlfriend is Bulgarian and I want to be able to communicate with her family. I have been trying to learn from a book/cd but Duolingo would be perfect for sneaking in some practice. Duolingo please help make this happen. Thanks in advance to both the course volunteers and Duolingo.
I'm an English speaker and am very interested in learning Bulgrian on Duolingo. I travel to Bulgaria fairly often so it would be really useful. I have yet to find a self-study method as effective as Duolingo. I'd definitely sign up for plus if I could study Bulgarian along with my other languages.
I found Bulgaro.IO which has a very similar structure as duo, but alas after the first 5 skill, they want money. But anyway if they were able to build such a course, then we here on DUO should be able to as well!
Give me a few years, and I'll come back and contribute myself if need be!
I'd like to see Bulgarian-English and English-Bulgarian on Duolingo. I've applied to contribute a few years ago, and I applied again now. As other people said in the comments, since there are Russian courses, cyrillic is now available, it wouldn't be technically difficult to include Bulgarian.
Please start hatching a course for bulgarian! My family are bulgarian, though I have struggled to learn organically and could really benefit from a course to structure my learning. My grandparents are both old and it is my dream to hold meaningful conversations with them before they pass. Please duolingo! Are there a few people who are willing to muck together and create a course?
Bulgarian-English speakers - If you would like to contribute please comment below. Let's get this going!
I would love to see a Bulgarian course on Duolingo!!! I was born in Bulgaria (so I'm fluent in Bulgarian), but I'm also fluent in English because I live in the US. I applied years ago to teach Bulgarian, and Duolingo never got back to me... I was hoping to apply again, but now they won't even let me submit the application.
I want to get the conversation going again, to see if they'll do something this time around. Literally every year I talk to dozens of people who want to learn Bulgarian, and it's baffling how there's no popular online platform that teaches it!
6 or so years of people asking for a Bulgarian course, a language spoken by 8 million people. On the incubator there are languages like Maōri, a language spoken by 50 thousand people I mean- I truly don't understand how Duo chooses the language to build a course for. The demand for Bulgarian is clearly big and constant for years, people tirelessly asking for it. There are tons of natives willing to help build it for the tons of non-speakers wishing for it to learn. What are they waiting for? Seriously!
You could also try 50languages.com You could choose German as "native" and Bulgarian as "want to learn", if you want to keep practicing your German ;) So start with those two and let me know, if you would like more resources I would gladly see what i could recommend next :D There so many resources I've discovered to learn languages, luckily there are many websites and tools - all for free. It only takes motivation and time. Greets, JV
Thanks so much for these resources. Signed up on Memrise and now working on 50 Languages! I LOVE language learning. So important to at least attempt the native language of the country you're traveling in rather than make yourself look like a fool when you expect someone to understand and speak English.
Sure, I recommend you - memrise.com ! 1.Register - very easy and quickly to do it; 2. You go to the "Search-courses" button and type "Bulgarian"; 3. There are multiple language courses over there, so you pick one and enjoy, after you finish it, you choose another one; P.S.: The website is about learning anything in every area you could imagine, not only languages. Explore and enjoy! Greets, JV
I found Bulgarian course in this Ling app: On Play Store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.simyasolutions.ling.universal On App Store: https://apps.apple.com/th/app/learn-languages-with-ling/id1403783779
I want Bulgarian a lot. My fiance's mother and extended family are Bulgarian and I would like to be able to learn for the family. The other resources I've tried have been pretty bad and not congruent with my learning style.
I also reached out to Pimsleur with no luck. Meh.
"Help me Obi-wan Kenobi, you're my only hope!"
Yea, please add Bulgarian. It would be really helpful to millions of Bulgarians trying to learn English and other languages. It is the base of many of the languages spoken in countries around Bulgaria. Adding it to Duolingo will help so many people and I'm sure it's worth it! Please, write a comment to make this post bigger so Bulgarian will be added sooner. Thanks.
Thank you for sharing that info, I didn't know that they made a change. I just applied and I think that all who haven't done it for a long time should refresh their applications. Also, someone must apply for Course Captain, I don't feel that skilled, so I didn't select it.
I would absolutely love a Bulgarian course. Are there any updates on this?
I have seen so many comments of people willing to contribute. If I am not mistaken, there was once a Bulgarian course in early stages of incubation, but this was apparently cancelled for some reason. I don't understand how they can create complete courses for fictional languages, while completely ignoring the demand for a Bulgarian course. This has been going on for 7 years now. I hope one day we will get a Bulgarian course...
Just leaving a comment to give the post a bump, there are about 5 huge posts pushing for Bulgarian to be added, and clearly a lot of interest!
Please everyone keep calling for the course to be accepted; with Russian in Beta, the Cyrillic alphabet hurdle has already been cleared, and I know from browsing these threads that there are at least 3 dedicated Bulgarians with language teaching and software skills all willing to take on the challenge.
Thanks again for your enthusiasm,. please make it happen! :)
Of course, Russian and Bulgarian very close lexically. When i try to read Bulgarian i feel like i read in ancient Russian language, i can understand (finding common roots) about 60% without dictionary help. But when i hear Bulgarian i can understand less (but understand:)). (I'm native Russian, and i did not learn Bulgarian yet, i know just general principles).
I added a feature request for a timetable in the incubator - https://www.duolingo.com/comment/16494611 - if you like it give it a thumb up. I hope that if this one gets implemented into Duolingo incubator we will see an estimated date when courses with Bulgarian will start being worked on.
To all English speakers, in short the above means: I have prepared page http://kids-read.appspot.com to support a feature request. It can also help us form a team of contributors for the course even before it enters the incubator.
The purpose of this page is to serve as a prototype of the feature I requested. The purpose of the real page - the one to be implemented when Duolingo accepts to support the feature - will be, first, to visualize the process from an application for a course till phase one in the incubator, and second, to track the progress of applications for courses throughout this process. The problem the page solves is with the different understandings of applicants, learners and Duolingo team about the process in this pre-incubator stage. What are the factors that play in choosing which course gets into incubator when? How can applicants improve their preparedness and their chances to get their course started?
I will try to contact the Duolingo team about the feature request when I know there is some support of it among the contributors. My goal is to get 50+ votes in https://www.duolingo.com/comment/16494611 as evidence for that. It currently has 40 votes. Once I make contact with the Duolingo team I will try to get better understanding of the pre-incubator process and will improve the prototype based on that. Until then, the steps I put on the page, including the 5 contributors to form a team piece is just a guess of mine. It just illustrates the idea of tracking progress.
Meanwhile, however, we can use that page to track who is still willing to contribute to a English for Bulgarian speakers or Bulgarian for English speakers course. I wouldn't count on an application or a comment in a discussion made one year ago...
I just found this comment https://www.duolingo.com/comment/1627314$comment_id=1658898
So my guess of 5 contributors is off the mark. It seems it takes two qualified moderators to make a team: "Luis: (1) We will let mods start working on them, and it will take some time for them to be built. (2) We will always require at least two qualified mods."
I'm a native Bulgarian speaker and I also speak English and Swedish fluently. I wrote to Duolingo about adding Bulgarian to the list with available language courses. I'd be more than happy to contribute and help create it. I did upvote this and many other topics/suggestions. I hope it helps so we can get started.
I would like duolingo to add Bulgarian; so my son can communicate with his Bulgarian parents in law. Do we have enough interest now to get the course to the incubator stage (assuming I have followed the process)? I have completed the French course and found it to be fantastic; I can never be thankful enough for the time you have all taken in making the course available to me. Wonderful application.
I'd like to have it on Duolingo so I can practice. As a bilingual abroad I do not have many opportunities to practice my native language. I can contribute as well but I'm not as confident as in my other native language. Bulgarian to English (Bulgarian for English speakers) sounds like a project I can help work on..
I'm very interested! After using Memrise and many other language learning apps I would be really excited to see Bulgarian come to Duolingo. It's a great platform.
Is there anything I can do to help promote this?
My partner is a native speaker, and fluent in English, so she would be very happy to help.
Well, Duolingo still not have a Bulgarian course, even I see many people want to learn this language. I also want to learn Bulgarian. So, I try to find another source and I found the app called 'Ling app.' This app is nice and really good for learning languages. Like learning through playing games. Also, you can choose the level of your Bulgarian from beginner to expert including 50 lessons to learn. I totally recommend Ling! Here is the download link: https://ling-app.com/ Ling has an app version and web version as well.
MILA RODINO!!!! I love Bulgaria and I would very like to learn Мила Родино
As many of us are having to resort to tracking down other language apps to learn Bulgarian, Duolingo is losing out by dragging their feet here. I love duo for Spanish, but as I am exploring the other apps that have Bulgarian, I see they, too, offer Spanish. Hmmmm, thinks I who thinks the thunks he thunk--maybe I can get all my courses of a language cuisine in a single location? Get on it, Duo!!
Seeing as it doesn't look like duolingo will ever make a bulgarian course...
Can someone recommend the best alternative for learning bulgarian on another website. Something in the style of Duolingo or Memrise. I know some people started making a memrise course but it seems they gave up.
Let me know the best apps/websites for learning bulgarian properly, with good grammar etc..
