As of lately I've been trying to find shows to improve my vocabulary and listening skills and by fate stumbled upon a BEAUTIFUL documentary called Deutschland von oben (Germany from above)

The scenery, the technology, the animals, die Natur, and everything German is so magnificent.

The show was a success when it premiered during its first season with over 5 million viewers and won a few awards because of it.

I watch the episodes on Youtube

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kz49S4Izm2o

They also have a film version called "Germany launched from above" which I will watch.

You should check it out if you're learning German. They do have subtitles in German so don't fret. Of course the difficulty level is high but you will hear and see words, prepositions, adverds, etc that you know. LoL

Thanks, this looks great! I see it's also available through the website of the ZDF TV channel, along with a lot of other promising-looking programmes.

Ironically, the youtube link doesn't work in Germany (as a result of the GEMA dispute), but the one above, direct on ZDF's website, works.

I just watched the first three minutes and had no trouble understanding it so far. The few unfamiliar words were easily inferred from the picture and general sentence so the meaning came through ok. (Currently 11 chapters away from the end of the DL tree, and also attending a B2.2 class while living in Munich)

I found it quite easy to listen to as the audio is very clear and well pronounced (think "BBC Presenter English" vs "street English").

This is amazing, I love the German landscape and culture so I'm torn between watching the video or concentrating on the text and trying to read it!

It's very hard because the scenery is very beautiful. Right now my method is writing all the text down and deciphering the words I dont know and then after I'm done go back and watch the video again

Lol, germany might well have the worst tv probably in europe lol, all the best things are just english and american shows imported and they have this thing where for example you'll be watching the uk top gear and instead of hearing jeremy clarkson properly dubbed you can still hear him while the deustch tranlator overlaps him

So one shouldn't rely on entertainment from the television while visiting Germany? LoL

E-mail the links to yourself. They are "available", they have simply been removed by the search engine. (You can also download the MP4's and view them offline.)

Thanks for this! I will definitely have to watch this. The German subtitles will be really helpful.

If anyone's interested, they also have something like this for the Netherlands!-

'Nederland van boven' (The Netherlands from above): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E9Q6INghWjM. ('Aflevering 1'='episode 1')

Sadly they don't have subtitles, but I do think the presenter speaks pretty clearly.
