I find this way too literal a translation, and proposed 'Soms is verliezen een feite'. What do you guys think of that?... :-/

Soms is verliezen een feit (without the e) would mean Sometimes losing is a fact which sound a bit strange to me.

Why do we need "de" here?

No idea. I left it out and got an error. Seems wrong to use "de". "Een feit" seems to work better, as suggested elsewhere...
