While on my trip in Mexico i watched a little bit of children's television to freshen up my spanish and my favorite show is Peppa Pig.

It is for a very little target audience and you can basically watch it without any prerequisites. But it ist still fun to watch and i learned alot about stuff you need daily (weather, shopping, house stuff, directions and so on)

Here is a 4 hour collection :D

Talking about kid's shows, "Pocoyo" has a pretty basic vocabulary and the characters are really likeable. https://www.youtube.com/user/pocoyotv/videos

The best thing about Pocoyo though, is that it has official youtube channels in 14 languages. https://www.youtube.com/user/pocoyotv/channels

I might waste a lot of time "studying" with those Pocoyo channels.

I watched them on my phone during the flight and the neighbors asked why i was smiling all the time.

I picked up a lot of missing words too, like for example: Duolingo teaches spoon and knife but not fork (cuchara, cuchillo, tenedor en español).

And the crazier the situation the better to remember.

I have a theory, that a joke is funny if it is not a) too easy to understand and not b) too hard to decode. If it is just right for you then it is funny. Because translation and comprehension complicate things they can be funny even though you are technically out of the age group to enjoy :D

On the same note, Disney movies are very well translated into Spanish. So if you are familiar with the English version (or know every line by heart :D), you should try watching it in Spanish.

You are right but in the beginning it is very hard to follow a story if it is complicated. (Every movie is complicated in someway with multiple story lines etc to be enjoyable). Shorter clips that are situational help me build a foundation for the movies later!

E.g. I enjoy No se Aceptan Devoluciones ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2378281/) and it is very funny, but i am far from understanding everything in it :D

https://www.duolingo.com/Honeyworder

That's why I said you should be familiar with the movie in English. If you know the story (or you can quote the whole movie ;) then you should try it in Spanish.

The only thing you have to watch for in Disney movies is that the Spanish subtitles frequently don't match the spoken Spanish. Beyond that, yes, they're really fun to learn from, especially if you know the songs =D

https://www.duolingo.com/Honeyworder

The songs are the best part! :-D And Disney does a really good job with their translations. In some movies they only translate the dialogue and then the songs are in English, but Disney translates the songs and the jokes very cleverly.

Speaking of cartoons. For all MLP:FiM lovers here:

MLP:FiM in european Spanish: http://www.dailymotion.com/lexlightlikesmlpfim

MLP:FiM in hispanoamerican Spanish: http://www.taringa.net/comunidades/mlpfim/7435320/Todos-los-Episodios-y-Comics-oficiales-de-MLP-FiM.html

Transcriptions for the latter: http://es.mlp.wikia.com/wiki/Transcripciones

Unfortunately, both translations are not nearly as good as the original. But still worth watching, especcially if you've seen and remember well the English version.

¡Hello! Sorry for my bad english.

I agree with you, because watch cartoons for children are very useful for to develop the new language and increase your vocabulary. In my case, I've seen english cartoons and that way I've able to understand listening English too better. The key in this process is practice, practice and practice...

Good bye and good luch in your learning!

There is a good talk on ted about the same topic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d0yGdNEWdn0

A beautiful point is that you learn in a nurtured and protected environment like with your parents and friends. And while your learning as a child you are not getting corrected every time you say something wrong, they forgive you, but encourage you to learn by responding in correct sentences :-)

The hardest part is always to try something you are not good at it. It is so easy to just avoid it, so embrace failure and keep improving.

See you around webnauta and wonder boy :-)

This is reassuring and I think a great tool to increase listening comprehension skills. Let's not forget the cartoons play a big role for young children growing up to acquire proficiency in their language, so it should work just as well for us at a beginning stage when learning a new language :) It feels good to actually understand 90% of the dialogue unlike when I watch Spanish speaking movies where I can distinguish some words and sentences but where the dialogue is very rapid and difficult to catch.

Thank you for the link!

My favorite story, where i got to use something i learned from the cartoons:

It was during my trip in Guadalajara walking through the city with my friends in the evening. The street is alive there at night and all the people are going out and all the children are running around and having fun.

Two little kids around 7 or 8 were playing with play guns that light up once you pull the trigger and they were chasing each other. We walked passed them and they looked away, i put my fingers like a gun in their back and said:

Manos arriba! (Hands up!)

The look on their faces went from shock to excitement very quickly. They talked about their weapons and dinosaurs and were very happy. The parents smiled even more. And i was happy because i understood everything they said :D

My friends laughed a lot during the evening about this encounter.

I love it :D
