Sentence Challenge: auteur et hauteur

(un) auteur <-> author
(une) hauteur <-> height

Now the challenge: use both of these words in the same sentence, and you will be rewarded a lingot. Here's my attempt:

Quelle est la hauteur de l'auteur ?
What is the author's height?

If any native/advanced speakers could help by correcting errors, that would be great, as my French is not good enough yet. To everyone else: Don't be afraid to make mistakes; that's how we learn!

L'auteur n'est pas à la hauteur de Voltaire - the author is not as good as Voltaire. I think. :-)

L'auteur n'est pas à la hauteur de ce que l'on attend de lui. The author is not as good as we expect him to be.

Well, here goes my try.... dans la hauteur de son carrière, l'auteur est tres fameux - at the height of his career, the author was very famous

Height in this sense would actually be "sommet" in french. Which literally means summit. And also était = was. So I would say: "Au sommet de sa carrière, l'auteur était très connu." Good sentence!

It is very simple but I haven't learned past tense nor negation yet. Nevertheless I like this challenge. So, this is my attempt:

  • Le discours de l'auteur est à la hauteur de sa réputation
  • (The author's speech is at the height of his reputation)
  • (El discurso del autor esta a la altura de su reputación)

What is the author's height? = quelle est la hauteur de l'auteur ?

PS : we would rather say : quelle est la taille de l'auteur ? :-))

Also love this idea. Some topics if you want to do it again in the future:

  • Au dessus Vs. Au dessous

  • l'aide (v) Vs. un(e) aide (n)

  • l'avocat (lawyer) Vs. l'avocat (avocado)

  • l'aire Vs. l'air

  • sûr Vs. sur

  • neuf (9) Vs. neuf (new)

  • la mûre Vs. le mur Vs. mûr

I have more if you want! :) Facinating stuff.

Actually AntonnioSpinoza started it (another moderator and EN<>ES course contributor). I've also done a few in the EN<>ES forums, but I wanted to spread it to the French forum as well. I agree; it really gets people practicing what they've learned and making their own sentences, which is, in my opinion, the most important part of language learning. It would be awesome if someone would do this for the other languages as well.

Thanks for the ideas! Feel free to post one yourself—it's not copyrighted or anything, anyone can do it! It looks like you're more experienced than me in French anyway. Another idea: amande and amende.

La hauteur de l'auteur est grande.

I'm doubtful that's correct.

Since du means de le, and l' is the contraction of le, du l' is redundant. So, it should be "La hauteur de l'auteur" (as goyatse corrected me).

Thanks for the tip!

Seems a confusing way to explain it. In simple terms du doesn't contract with a vowel noun as, depending on the context, we'd be unable to tell if the noun took a partitive or definite article (i.e. de or le). So for the partitive, its d'auteurs - or in the case of a mass noun, d'eau. Whereas the definitive takes de l'auteur as above or de l'eau.

Auteur Alex Haley était à la hauteur de sa carrière à la généalogie; Author Alex Haley was at the height of his career in genealogy.
