[From imgur] Culinary Image of the Netherlands

Hello Dutch learners!

For many people, certain foods come to mind when thinking about certain cultures. But not all cultures seem to think of the same things!

I found this post by imgur user revilox90 showing what Germans, Brits, Belgians, and the French think of when they think of Dutch food (and worked up an appetite in doing so):

The Culinary Image of the Netherlands

Now our question for you:

What is the food you think of when you think of Dutch cuisine?

This survey only covered the views of a few countries/cultures. It would be interesting to know the views of others :)

Stamppot, speculaas, drop, hagelslag

When I look at the images, I think jenever and drop are definitely missing/underrated.

As a Dutchman, I'd go for bitterballen as the food, especially because of the link to the very Dutch cultural phenomenon of borrels and borrelen.

Heineken and Amstel beers.

Cheese, especially Gouda, Edam and Limburger.

Carrots: I remember reading that the color of standard grocery carrots is orange because Dutch growers selectively bred them that way to honor their royal family - the House of Orange-Nassau.

According to this site, that likely is NOT true:

But true or not, having read that long ago I tend to think about it when eating carrots. And I eat carrots often, for health reasons.

I remember old school Dutch autumns very well. The fierce winds and cutting rain when coming home from school. And then upon opening the door: the tempting smell of some delicious hachée being prepared. Wow!
