Duolingo is the most popular way to learn languages in the world. Best of all, it's 100% free!

Why isn't anybody checking up/downvoting translations?

As far as I see, I didn't see too much activity on the checking of the articles at the immersion. I didn't recieve any up or downvotes, and I see that other translations have the same problem. I would like to encourage everybody to give feedback about everybodys' translations. This could be a thread to highlight articles, to make this part of duo more active. :)

Hopefully you won't receive downvotes. Most of us refrain from downvoting, since it takes such a toll on your progress up the tiers.

I've found that translating newer articles (sort the article list by "Newest" to find those) can help others see your translations more quickly.

One problem I've found with translations in general is that there is no way to finish an article and get it off the list entirely. I can upload an article, have lots of people work on it, "proofread" and upvote or correct those translations...and then what happens? Nada. Maybe a year later someone will go in & work on re-translating a complete article - putting in bad GoogleTranslate translations over the top of previously good work. I've even seen someone viciously downvoting ALL sentences in an article; why, I'm not sure. This whole area of DL needs work.

You can ask a higher level immersion person to check your work for you too... Opportunity to make a new friend. shrug

I agree that this is a little discouraging. Although it is nice to try and improve skills via translation, it seems lackluster when so many articles and translated sentences sit ignored. This starts to eat away at the incentive to use this feature.

I see that you've only translated the WoW article from Spanish to English. I just checked that list of immersion documents and either you're translating a really old document or it hasn't been made publicly available yet.

If it's really old, you won't get any translations approved. Document activity dies off once it falls too far down the list. If it's a newly posted article, it can take a little time to become visible to everyone else. Has anyone else translated ANYTHING in the document yet? If not, it's probably only visible to you at the moment.

I've submitted immersion documents that have been added to the list almost immediately. Other documents have taken up to 2 days to show up on the document list.

I also translated some from the Fairy Tail article and from the
7 Interpretative Essays on the Peruvian Reality: The Indian Problem article too. WoW is just the most recent I worked on. But there is really something is what you say.

I feel the same way. It seems that some articles get translated and checked quickly but others just linger forever.

Is there even a team of ppl specifically designated to do this? I don't think so. I am almost done with my article (and it's been a blast - I would do it for NOTHING), but I would like a little bone thrown my way, right? I'm sure a lot of you lower tier guys and girls feel the same.

No, there isn't a team of Duolingo staff that up/downvotes translations. It's all up to other users. If other people read the articles, they are the ones who can give you upvotes.

I do wish Duolingo would emphasize more that you do get xp from checking other people's sentences.

Personally, I've stayed out of the immersion area of this site because I haven't got a clue how to do it. I've searched for instructions, to no avail. Maybe that's other peoples problems as well

There is an Unofficial Duolingo Wiki created by users, with lots of helpful information. (http://duolingo.wikia.com/wiki/Duolingo_Wiki)

I like the FAQ for immersion (http://duolingo.wikia.com/wiki/Frequently_asked_questions/Immersion) and there is also a long-version of the community guidelines, too. (http://duolingo.wikia.com/wiki/Immersion_Community_Guidelines_(Unofficial))

Post me a message if you want more specific answers :)
