Does the German sentence translate better as:
"I wanted to watch television" [e.g., watch a program]
"I wanted to see the television set" [e.g., I wanted to look at the device.]
It's the latter. "Fernseher" only refers to the device.

So how would be "I wanted to watch the TV"?

I wrote the latter which is correct and it counted it as wrong!
