Literal translation vs. phrases

I lost a heart for translating "petit pain" as "roll." The translation came back as "little bread." Which is a roll. How does one know when to use phrases or colloquial expressions rather than literal translations?

Both idiomatic expressions and literal translations can be used. This problem will be fixed soon! Thanks for your feedback.
I stopped studying precisely because I kept on losing points for non-literal translations. I appreciate that it is very difficult to write software to cater for every possible variant, but encouraging users to translate literally results in stilted cheesy translations. It seems to me the didactic methodology has not been thought through, the way new structures are presented is not effective and demotivating.
